Local Directory Rant - darn SEO monkeys

The stuff that gets submitted to Local directories is so astoundingly lame one has to wonder how many drooling idiots are trying to pass themselves off as SEOs.

In a directory where it is obvious by looking at the exi
sting listings that a certain amount of detail is allowed and even encouraged... Why would you leave "Products and Services" blank? How exactly do you have a business without either products OR services?

Better yet... why would you submit a descrip in "About Us" that says "Locally owned!" Seriously?

Aside from being too short AND bereft of any appropriate and necessary keywords... what the heck do you need an exclamation mark for? Is being locally owned so astonishing one must shout it? Are ALL others owned by China or Iran? And is that the only thing we should know about you... as opposed to letting us know if you're a CPA or a taxi-driver?

Frankly anyone that has a brain can write an entire directory of descriptions without a single exclamation mark. They're generally a sign you're dealing with an idiot.

Yes, I'm cranky. Been working on a Local dir. Some of these submissions are just so sad.

Another common way to throw away a good blank that could've helped is "Family owned and operated!"

Who fucking cares? For all I know your entire family is serial murderers. Is it the one and only thing I need to know about your company? Is that more important than telling me something about the services you provide? [And see prior note about exclamation marks. Just a sign the guy writing is an idiot, or maybe has a massive case of Tourette Syndrome.

    And here's a lovely job. I'd have taken a long description of your company in about us. I'd have let you list all your products and services. But no... you put ONE word in each of those blanks... and you misspelled that one. {@!#!!}

The SEO gurus doing crap like this?
Probably a dime a day Pakis or Indians.

Now, the link does not work.

And doing that to a directory is like leaving a comment on a blog that just says "Liked your blog".

In the post-Penguin world, and outside of sites in your industry, local business directories are one of the few legitimate places to place links. That will only last until Google decides to penalize those, as well.

I have to agree with Dawg, it is probalby not local businesses placing the listings, but rather mostly Indians. They still dominate the link building industry and are still screwing up site rankings.

Rob, is the local directory capturing IP addresses when submissions are made? If they are not, they should. I would flag every submission for possible deletion that did not originate from someone within the state.

Worth considering. And yeah... I suspect a lot of the serious crap comes from fly-by-night link-builders who charge little and arent worth a dime. Other day I got this in the "About Us" section for a cleaning company:

-- Over 30 experience. Yes we speek english

Yeah... probably do, but the guys in Pakistan who wrote your descrip don't.

Do you think it is worth the time to get listed in business directories?

I have been wondering what I could do to help out the souvenir shop I work at part time.

This is over a year old info but I think it applies.

What the article really suggests is that Google now favors large companies and large web sites. We saw that happen across the board. Search for any consumer product and you will likely find Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, eBay, Crutchfield, etc., dominating the search results.

I just did a search for 'home theater amplifier' and the only relatively small site that showed up in search results is in position #10. That site has 1700 pages in Google's index. How can you compete against that?

Remember that Google does not see web site owners as it customers for organic search results. It customers are searchers. Google also directly benefits from the diminished rankings for the millions of much smaller web sites because it forces more site owners to use AdWords. There are a small number of large companies, but millions of small companies who desperately depend on Google for traffic.

    Follow the money.

As I've been saying for the past couple of years, "Google has destroyed billions of dollars in value on the web."

To answer your question, legitimate well-known business directories still work. All of the crappy directories do not, and those listings can suppress rankings. The test is to search for the keywords that best represent a business. If it is a local business, include the name of the city. If a directory does not show up in search results, it is not themed for that search phrase and is not likely to drive any traffic.

I think Rob described pretty well the more frequent error of small owners looking to list their businesses in local directories by using "Family owned and operated". I am like him, I don't give a damn about this information.

Like Top said: "Google has destroyed billions of dollars in value on the web." These days it is difficult to find the right results because either you click on spam links or you have often irrelevant sponsored results.

We were talking about keyword stuffing the other day. Here's today's example from someone's "products and services" section. Personally, I don't have the daylight to fix these, I just hit delete.

cosmetic dentistry Arlington TX, implant dentistry Arlington TX, invisalign, pediatric dentistry Arlington TX, family dentistry Arlington TX, emergency dentistry Arlington TX, general dentistry Arlington TX, TMJ dentistry Arlington TX, tmj treatment, root canal treatment, dental service, dental care, teeth doctor, teeth services, teeth care, teeth implants, teeth whitening, teeth bleaching

If I ask you for your products and services... I want to see a fucking list (or paragraphs written in real English) about your products and services, not a list of all terms you wish to be ranked for on Google. There IS a difference. The difference is... one will be left intact, the other will end up getting zapped with a delete button by any editor that's tired of the bullshit. Can't speak for other editors, but I have an extraordinarily low threshold for crap.
