Local Directory Rant - darn SEO monkeys

The stuff that gets submitted to Local directories is so astoundingly lame one has to wonder how many drooling idiots are trying to pass themselves off as SEOs.

In a directory where it is obvious by looking at the exi
sting listings that a certain amount of detail is allowed and even encouraged... Why would you leave "Products and Services" blank? How exactly do you have a business without either products OR services?

Better yet... why would you submit a descrip in "About Us" that says "Locally owned!" Seriously?

Aside from being too short AND bereft of any appropriate and necessary keywords... what the heck do you need an exclamation mark for? Is being locally owned so astonishing one must shout it? Are ALL others owned by China or Iran? And is that the only thing we should know about you... as opposed to letting us know if you're a CPA or a taxi-driver?

Frankly anyone that has a brain can write an entire directory of descriptions without a single exclamation mark. They're generally a sign you're dealing with an idiot.

Yes, I'm cranky. Been working on a Local dir. Some of these submissions are just so sad.

Another common way to throw away a good blank that could've helped is "Family owned and operated!"

Who fucking cares? For all I know your entire family is serial murderers. Is it the one and only thing I need to know about your company? Is that more important than telling me something about the services you provide? [And see prior note about exclamation marks. Just a sign the guy writing is an idiot, or maybe has a massive case of Tourette Syndrome.

Rob, like I said, the same crap show up as blog comments on my blogs all the time.
No coherent sentence, just the same keywords in different order, over and over and over.

I am thinking, like you, that so many small business and small website owners are spending bucks with so called SEO gurus (I have yet to come across a real one) to post crap like this all over the net.

There are legitimate SEO companies out there. They do not rip people off and they do not engage in crappy link building. I know because I ran an SEO company for many years and we never engaged in the type of crap that people frequently told us they paid big bucks for, nor did we do link building. Unfortunately, that is not the situation today for probably at least 70% to 80% of the remaining SEO companies. Most of the legimate companies got tired of pissing into the wind and moved on to other things.

In all the years we were doing SEO work, I never met a legitimate link builder or one who even did what they said they would do.

Just last month I picked up a new AdWords client with a 10 page website who told me he was paying $100 per month through Network Solutions for SEO.com to do monthly search engine submissions. He was quite surprised when I told him search engine submissions have been obsolete and worthless for at least 10 to 12 years.

    And here's a lovely job. I'd have taken a long description of your company in about us. I'd have let you list all your products and services. But no... you put ONE word in each of those blanks... and you misspelled that one. {@!#!!}

The SEO gurus doing crap like this?
Probably a dime a day Pakis or Indians.

Now, the link does not work.

And doing that to a directory is like leaving a comment on a blog that just says "Liked your blog".

In the post-Penguin world, and outside of sites in your industry, local business directories are one of the few legitimate places to place links. That will only last until Google decides to penalize those, as well.

I have to agree with Dawg, it is probalby not local businesses placing the listings, but rather mostly Indians. They still dominate the link building industry and are still screwing up site rankings.

Rob, is the local directory capturing IP addresses when submissions are made? If they are not, they should. I would flag every submission for possible deletion that did not originate from someone within the state.

Do you think it is worth the time to get listed in business directories?

I have been wondering what I could do to help out the souvenir shop I work at part time.

This is over a year old info but I think it applies.

I know individuals and companies will spend useless time and money trying to get their website/business out on the net.
Long story, but I ran sites back in the early 90's that were nothing but banner farms.
And people paid me big bucks to have their banner shown.

And then there was my son and a few others.
Who convinced a lot of companies to host with them to the tune of upwards of $10,000 a month!
And who designed sites, wrote needed software, etc for big freaking bucks.

And today, one would think something like the above would not be happening.
    But sadly, it still does.
See USG for proof of people who were clueless about sites and paid out millions to have sites put up (latest one did not and still does not work).

Worth considering. And yeah... I suspect a lot of the serious crap comes from fly-by-night link-builders who charge little and arent worth a dime. Other day I got this in the "About Us" section for a cleaning company:

-- Over 30 experience. Yes we speek english

Yeah... probably do, but the guys in Pakistan who wrote your descrip don't.
