There are many brandable domains available. Think outside the box.

This is a response to some posts in this thread in February about DMOZ. Sorry after reading them I did a post and forgot the rest of the thread
Promoting ones own site over and against a competitor site is grounds for all editing privileges to be withdrawn, if you suspect such please report the matter.
Please believe we are not a listing service, sites suggested are just that and editors are encouraged to find sites for themselves. Some rarely look at submissions and some work it all the time. But there is no way of telling when a site will be reviewed. If a site conforms to guidelines then it will be waiting for an editor to review it. If it has been reviewed and rejected then it will not conform to guidelines. If it does conform to guidelines then it is waiting, as I said. We do not advise if a site is rejected.
Sites generally rejected are rejected on grounds of not being unique content. The style of the site, page rank etc has nothing to do with getting listed.
And when you talk about any categories not having editors that is just not true, all categories have many editors, that's one reason that someone cannot just list their own or friends sites. Any editor 'further up the tree' in that category can and often does edit in any sub category below where their name is listed. Also we have over 200 editors who can edit anywhere in the directory. So there is no category in the directory without an editor and no category where the named editor has total control.

So...back in January/early Feb, I picked up two free, general web directories:
LinkUrSite and LinkEase . When I got the sites they had about 2000 listings, each is about 5k now but I have some cleaning to do on the original 2000. Like you guys have mentioned, you don't really make anything from CPC with directories. Besides, going to a $1 submission fee (really just to help quelch the spam submissions like Will mentioned) and cleaning out the crap submissions, is there a decent CPM advertiser you've seen for directories? I was going to switch out the Adtoll/Google banners for Adbrite (really just to try em out). THink each has probably made about 3 bucks in Adtoll adds in three months.
And, yes if I had to do it over, when I bought each of them, I would have restarted each as a niche directory to do targeted marketing in the submission ack and approval emails!
Here's a question based on a query I had from a few folks...if I'm making jack with my 2 x free directories right now (though I think Adbrite will == about 5 bucks on the one I swapped out Google Adsense with per month), and I got queried for how much per month for a 468 banner from a potential advertiser...what's the right starting price to ask him for?
Site stats for each directory are loosely:
Jan - Start up 500 uniques each
Feb 1100 Uniques 1800 visits
Mar 1680 Uniques 2300 visits
April - 2200 Uniques - 2900 Vists
May - On track for 27-3000 uniques
Adsense made about 50 cents a month on each, Adtoll about 2 bucks, so figured hey I'll try adbrite since they pay CPM (but it is small).
I haven't marketed the feature links (no time) and was debating on shifting to the $1 submission rate on one of them (the one without Adbrite) to test the Spam theory.
About 5 k listed in each and I need to clean up some junk that got into each prior to my acquisition (2k in each when I got em). Alexa rankings are in the low 200,000's...the sites were 700,000's when I got em.
Linkursite.info, and linkease.info are the two directories.
Thoughts are welcome.
- Direct Media Exchange
- Tribal Fusion
- Burst Media
- Ad Dynamix
Then, I would define a reasonable eCPM for my niche. These are general directories, so I might guess $6 is reasonable.
Finally, I would multiply the expected page views per month by the eCPM target and come up with the number.

I have made my directory paid.
How would I go about filtering non related submissions out? My directory is only about Mortgages and related services such as real estate.
