Thread: Making money with a free directory?

Very useful advice ..I will probably open up a paid directory. Do you think that this niche is saturated? I see way too many directories (free) that open up for two months and then leave.

The ones that open up and leave are the ones that are looking at the short term gain. If you are serious about it, you need to be in it for the long haul. No, I do not think the niche's is saturated. I think its full of a lot of crap, but of the quality sites, I think there are always room for more. Do keep in mind that many paid directories start out free and then close the doors to free links in order to again, build value to the directory be decreasing quantity and increasing quality.

thanks a lot for the help mate..learned quite a lot today. will let everyone know when my direcotry gets out. just need to buy a good domain name now

This is really an interesting thread with so much useful information.

We just started a new paid directory. The question is, how do you get started getting all those businesses submitting their websites?

It seems to me that I would break that difficult problem down into smaller pieces.

The first piece being, "How do we make our target customers aware of our product offering?"

Where do your target customers congregate? What do they read? How do you get a message in front of them?

In your niche, I might start with a much higher paid inclusion charge. It's a business expense for these guys.

You think so? Even though the directory is still brand new and hasn't got any links to it yet?

I don't know your target customers very well, but my gut feeling is that they don't really understand "PageRank" or other SEO topics very well and that they are in a very competitive business where advertising can pay off with just one successful customer close.

Changed it to $10. Will keep adding good sites on my own, and those who want in, need to pay. You´re right, $10 is absolutely nothing for any mortgage company.

I have open my directory for only about two days, and already have over 1000 links. I think I should close it for now and only accept paid entries. Although, I really got 1500 link submissions, but i rejected about 500 of them because they were

pills, casino, gambling, adult stuff

. I have a clean directory with only quality links and a lot of them are companies and useful information sites.

TWO QUESTIONS

1. Its a PR2 directory, how much should I charge for entries and should they be permanent?

2. On this page, i added a featured link, but the website screenshot is not working. Any idea on how I can fix this?

If they submit porn or gambling , what I do is I redirect them to my other directory BSDirectory
