Making money with a free directory?

OLX seems to be betting on geo relevant searches.

Their Alexa rating is 7,257. They seem to be winning that bet.

Such a Long thread :P. Couldn't stop myself from reading whole 9 pages and will have to admit there were some very good advices.

As I've asked in another thread I've been looking for a niche for a directory and so far only one guy suggested "Health Related Directory" which isn't really a bad niche but do you people think there is much scope for a health realted directory?

Also I want to start a Paid directory and will do everything to make it one of the best resource (well you can try), do you guys think I should make it free in the beginning and then after few days start charging or just don't make it free at all? I'm a bit confused here.

PHPLD is the best thing to go with or would you suggest any other scripts?

As a directory pro, all I can say is ...it all depends on your niche and the name of your domains.
One size cannot fit all!!

It is all about trial and error.
when you get traffic and $$$, then hire a professional to customize.

I have tested only 2 directories scripts (the licensed versions): phpLD and Tolra's Directory Script and the second one is far more superior to phpLD in my opinion and for my needs. Although is going to be hard to find any themes if any for the second one except the ones that comes with the script. But if you can find a designer&programmer to help you or you can make your theme by yourself you're better off with the second one in my opinion. The script is pretty rare (I bet you didn't heard of it until now) and this makes your directory more unique than all those common phpLD directories. Their support is great (I can attest that).

Thanks for the info Andrew. I just came to know about the second script you posted and it looks good though their themes aren't good (Just like you mentioned I'll have to work with a programmer/designer to come up with something good).

I'm yet to buy a domain name. I just want to clear some questions in my mind and then decide something.
