Not quite, Google should of never publicized pagerank. It makes their search engine too predictable, before you could make page, throw a pr5 link at it, and suddenly and day or two it would be in the top 10 for that keyword. I wouldn't call that useless. I think now things have changed a bit. Now it seem really unpredictable. They probably are testing a new algo that they are not publicizing. btw if I could take a guess, it would be links on their serp pages. Have you noticed kovich that links sometimes are redirection? Yes, I think their counting hits to the sites now. So if you in the #1 spot, but the one in #8 is getting more hits, then that one will push up threw the list. (my theory anyways).

Pagerank has value some value. It's just that what we see in the toolbar isn't a good measure of it.

Google is also using some form of authority, trust and local rank to weigh the power of a link.

Well yeah, I didn't mean to imply that it's totally useless.

But in the scheme of things, PageRank isn't really that important. I'd rather have a high-quality site and a steady stream of visitors than worry about whether or not my PageRank is a 4 or a 5, you know? What I mean is that PR shouldn't be a priority - there are more important things.

I agree with you that it's not worth the bother to worry about the tool bar page rank. The TBPR isn't really your pagerank. Google uses internal pagerank to score the sites rankings and they don't show that to us. Even the pagerank that they show in the toolbar is limited. Because, it's nothing more than the snapshot of your pr a few weeks ago and is already out of date. In the end, if your site is ranking well then you are doing something right.

In my recent experience the directory submissions help. Here's a couple of recent threads that you can find more discussion on the topic.

Depends on each individual directory your submitting too really and if its still being actively promoted by its wbmaster. Some people like to start one (or start too many at one time) and forget about em or just plainly get bored with them. But eitherway submitting directories definitly cant hurt the cause.

Try focusing on niche directories, since it helps more for SEO purposes.

Some directories are just link farms with adult links, so focus on clean ones. Search engines prefer directories with regular updates.
