Look for forums that are related to your sites topic. Sign up and add your site to your profile. Here on netbuilders, if you click a persons name - there is a drop down menu. You can view their profile, find more post, visit their homepage and there are a few more options.

If you have a link to your site in your profile, google will pick up the link in the drop down menu. And if your profile is visible by the public, google will pick the link in your profile.

Go through the forum and make some quality post.

Then go to the next forum.

Because there is no link in your signature and no link in your post, very few moderators check peoples profiles - especially on busy forums.

If you find a forum with 15,000 - 20,000 + members, and a forum that gets a few thousand post a day, its very easy to fly under the radar, build up backlinks and never be noticed.

When doing this type of link building, I mainly target VBulletin forums.

When you sign up on the forum, use targeted keywords in your username. Such as my name here is "Texas Hiker" and a link to my blog is in my profile. That is because I want the keyword "hiker" associated with my blog and I am from Texas.

2 - 3 weeks ago I targeted a popular forum with this same technique. And the links are already showing up using the link: sitename command in google.

Want to share a few things... I've been analyzing directories and the results for quite a while even before we built easysubmits... A few things to mention are:
    1) Most people tend to believe that they should submit to no more then 5-10 directories a day so the search engines don't take links as spam. I don't think 5-10 is a good number. I would rather make that number a 100. First of all, approval times vary from directory to directory. Some may approve it in a day, other in a year... Second, search engines will not index the page on the same day.
    2) Traffic wise directories are not a good resource. Out of 1000+ directories we submitted to, we get 5-10 visitors a day coming from directories. As a directory owner, I think that most of the traffic to the sites comes through people searching for something and ending up on a directory and clicking the link.
    3) It does have weight on SEO still. When you add a site to the directory make sure that you type the keyword you are targeting in the title field. So, if you want to rank high for "webmaster forum" that should be a PART of your title. Make sure to change titles every 100 submission or so, this way you are a) targeting different keywords b) it doesnt look like you are trying to spam the search engines.
    4) People tend to believe that the higher the PR the better. I dont think that this is a primary reason. I think directory age has more weight. For instance, I have fat64.net for 3-4 years now, it got penalized for selling links a few years back, but still weights more for SEs then others as far as I can tell. I have higher PR directories that dont show backlinks to other sites, but this one does and still moves the sites up a bit.
    5) Directories do have less value then links from blogs, forums, social networks and shouldn't be the primary source for promotion. However, everything counts, even no-follow I believe.

I have a few other points, but I think this is enough for the public knowledge.

Yep, if you don't vary the anchor text in these submissions and the description it's the equivalent of duplicate content.

That's why I manually bookmark (outsourced) and all my bookmarks get indexed, not 5% of them.

I'm not sure any directories out of the top 50 get indexed anymore

They do... Actually, about 70% of the searchengine traffic that I get on the directories is for the search strings like "link:url" And I get over 100 visitors a day coming from those search strings to each directory...

I think you are commiting suicide if you were to submit a new site to thousands of directories. I would focus more on quality then quantity when it comes to directory submissions.

I wasted my time and money on directory submissions a lot. May be during 2006-07 directory submission was a prime source of getting backlinks, Traffic, seo etc. but it seems to me a Bye bye! game for now.

Earlier this year we did directory submissions for the keywords
    College Admissions Assistance
and this was the only form of link building we used, and it has ranked #1 all year on google.

You are getting google sitelinks solely from directory links? I find that hard to believe.

Before some time directory submission was just like link building I think. Now it's not even updating and indexing. I spent lots of money and time over this issue. I could not get even a single link for this site NewGenre Software and BPO Solutions. But I think if you are posting your link over a High PR site the chance is high to get indexed but am not sure. We can't assure it.
