I unintentionally executed a test for this.

I registered a bunch of exact match domains and installed Wordpress on them.

Many of them ranked on page one for their target SERPS, with no inbound links and no content.

How did you manage to get them indexed with no links or content?

Not just indexed, but ranked and ranked well.

The only thing I can figure is that during the install process Wordpress does something which tickles Googlebot.

Perhaps "Allow my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Technorati" is a bit more powerful than it sounds.

The funny thing is that its not the default setting. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

I'll give you my thoughts, Might be better than a direct suffix VS SEO answer.

Every thing I do is for peoples/visitors/clients, Not for the SEO/SE's.

Therefor, When I pick a domain name, I think how they will look at it, Not the spiders..

I go with my feeling and it always works.

Apparently ccTLD's do receive an exact match domain bonus -- but not all of them. In particular, .us does not.
How about the .co.uk tld? It seems that it does well.

I like the .info even though it's spammed out. I'm wobdering the same thing as well.

Do you have adsense on the sites? The adsense bot crawls as well.

SEM is becoming more important as the SEs get more sophisticated. Content and your users should be your primary concern. What's the sense of getting an MBA in Marketing when a 13 yo is able to beat your site through seo tricks.

Aaron says it does; I have not tested.

Here's another interesting set of data from that project. Here's how the domain extensions are distributed:
    • 19 .com domains
    • 60 .net domains
    • 29 .org domains

And here's how the domains are performing so far:
    • 11 of the .com's are ranked.
    • 38 of the .net's are ranked.
    • 27 of the .org's are ranked.

That seems to imply that org domains are more powerful than com or net domains.

Moreover, the org's are theoretically in more competitive niches -- because I only registered org domains when com and net domains were not available.

    Pretty strange stuff!

That is strange. The site that is in my sig is a .org as well. The funny thing is that it's ranking for the keywords in the anchor text without any link building.

In conclusion .net is the weakest, .org is ranking good because is related to organizations and .com is a .com

Of all sites that I done until now, it was the hardest to develop .net domains (out of .com .net .org).
