I see the word being used very commonly these days, does it mean domain theft or just improper trading of domains?

"Domain flipping" means buying a domain and quickly selling (flipping) it for a profit.
The word "flipping" comes from the real estate industry, but is also used with the securities industry. Before the market crash a lot of investors were buying homes wherever they could find them at bargain in prices and then resold them for a profit. The homes quite often needed major repairs that the original owner could not afford. Sometimes they just needed a good cleaning, some new carpets and paint. The idea was to buy it cheap, fix it up for as little as possible and then sell it for as much as you can get.
I know a few people who flipped 3 or 4 homes per year when the market was good and picked up $100,000 or more in extra income per year.

I see no difference between selling it immediately or selling it after a while. In fact if i keep a domain with me for a while, i can expect its value to increase over the course of time.

I agree, usually you 'flip' a domain when you purchase it (for a cheap price) and then resell it without really developing it."Domain flipping" means buying a domain and quickly selling (flipping) it for a profit.

Not always buying a domain cheap and flipping it for a profit.
A lot of people buy domains at very high prices in hopes of flipping it for an even higher price.
That's entirely true, there are lots of domains going for a few thousand dollars at the namejet.com auctions.A lot of people buy domains at very high prices in hopes of flipping it for an even higher price.

Domain flipping is like flipping real estate. You buy a domain name cheap and resell it for more than you paid for it. You buy a broken down house, fix it, and resell it for a profit.
