    Domain's Question

I'm planning to buy few domains for upcoming projects and someone suggested me few good names. But I'm not sure whether to go with .net domain names or should I go with .coms (good names are not available in .com).

So what I wanted to know is:

1)- Why do people prefer .com over .net?

2)- is it difficult to get good results with .net?

3)- Is it hard to get good SE rankings with .nets? (I doubt that though).

Hoping for some good answers (Quick Answers)

    Regards

    1. .com is the first thing many people type in, as it's so common. No one would type in google.net if they knew about google.com am I right?

    2. It all depends on how much effort you put into getting results and such.

    3. Google likes .com / .net / .org the most if I remember correctly, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Ever heard the expression 'dotcom generation' or any other expression along the lines of 'what is your dotcom'?

It's what most people think of when they think of a web address, and will even make the mistake of typing in .com when they meant to type in .net.

It has just become habit to think of websites as dotcoms, especially for non-webmasters.

I've got a .net that is PR0 but is a top 10 serp for the keywords in its name; and that's out of millions of returns. It's also a top 10 for the plural.

    See above

There will be an edge to dotcoms, but that is mostly on the human side. If the dotcom is not available, and especially if there is nothing on it (like someone is just cybersquatting), a dotnet is a viable alternative, as well a dotorg, or even other tlds if the keyword is important to you.

I have PyramidEnergy.org, for example. The dotcom and dotnet were taken, but are simply parked. If I were to put an actual site on there, I would probably get a top serp for the keywords (not like anybody is falling over in astonishment on that though).

I don't too often go for dotnets, but if the dotcom is taken, but not used, and I want the keywords, I will.

I really get mad when I see someone already took a .com domain name and has simply parked it.

This is what I wanted to hear because I was kind of confused about this and now this clears everything/every doubt in my mind. That's why I was thinking how come Will bought netbuilders.org

Email them and ask if you can buy it?

Well even if they sell the domain names, they usually sell it for a lot which I don't think is worth it.

tried that myself on multiple occasions, but they ask unrealistic prices. For example, there was an auction on sedo, where the .com domain name I was looking for sold for $50. I was too late to that auction. I tried to send an email to the .org domain name owner and he was asking $5000 for his domain. The .com was sold for $50 and he was asking $5k for the .org domain name

I would suggest you to go for .net domains as they mean to be for Networks . Reason for preferring .com is that, usually people write domainname.com in flow and if the other site on .com is providing the same content/niche, you probably be losing your visitors. If good percentage of your visitors and from Search Engines, than you should not be worried about it.

I don't think that there is any issue of Google PR with .net domains. It all depends on the SEO you do for your website.

    Hope that helps. Cheers

Somehow this place just "feels" more like a .org -- an organization.

Being a .com would be more like being a company.

AFAIK, Google treats com, net, and org domains equally.
