For some undefined reasons, I always like to keep my domains seprate from my webhost.
May be I am bit paranoid, but I have heard that webhosts create a hell lot trouble if you want to host them somewhere else.
Domaisn are like valuable real estate. Keep them as much protected as possible. I always trust Godaddy and Namecheap when it comes to domains.
EDIT: I just realized that I never used the free domain registration feature which dreamhost provides. I am hosting my sites on dreamhost since last 2 years.
I tend to use Godaddy and Namecheap, as well. Some people complain about the advertising on Godaddy, complain that it's distracting and makes it difficult to navigate the site.
But in my view they are just advertising their services, as any good website should do, I guess.
I personally don't like to keep domains and hosting at one place. High prices (after 1st year) is one reason for that (either it is domain renewal or transfer).
Sometimes you can even have problems with domain transfers just like what happened to me. Got a free domain with yearly plan on hostmonster, tried to transfer it to namecheap and after 7+ days domain transfer was canceled with the reason that your registrar (in this case hostmonster) did not respond.
I keep all my domains with namecheap (90% of them) and rest with Godaddy and Dynadot.
Yeah Godaddy have some tough site navigation, but after a while you get used to it. Now I know how to find my way blindly to quick checkout. :D
