Just a note: I think we have to buy hosting from them to get a free domain with that coupon code. The thread title was misleading

No, The title was correct...
You can also get a free hosting with the same code..
But you just have to get the hosting and the domains in two different steps!!!

I had signed up with HostGator a while back and I think the code you posted is for when you're ordering a new hosting account. It's supposed to give you a free domain I believe, which is actually a pretty nice deal
