Google purchases a bunch of domains

As you may or may not know, I usually monitor the domain name purchases of some of the major online retailers and web properties. Certain domain name purchases catch my eye, and I try to post about it when something noteworthy is in the works. Usually, when someone has plans for something, they will purchase the domain name related to the new product or service–and companies planning big campaigns or products and services are no different.
In an interesting move, Google has purchased a bunch of domain names related to encouraging people to get online. This large purchase of 45 domain names today includes names such as GetOnlineAmerica.com, GetOnlineCalifornia.com, and GetOnlineCarolinas.com. The list of domain names purchased today by Google indicate to me that they’re planning some sort of nationwide campaign to encourage Americans to “get online”. But, of course, this is all just speculation on my part.

Google want the American to go online ...for selling more ads

I want more people online for the same reason (albeit not just ads). :P

But I think plenty already are. Who isn't online nowadays?

Is there any Google shareholders here?

Google should definitely encourage more Americans to get online. That will only grow their business. US is lacking when it comes to the percentage of people who are online--many countries have more people online per capita.

I don't get how the purchase of more domain names help them get people online? They surely have to advertise in TV, Radio and print media to haul folks out of the barn (hay loft?) and onto the main Google search site? Put apps on the Android that appeal to those that don't use the web much etc.

Hope this project clicks for all and not shut down later on.

If they use an Android phone chances are they already are online. You're right about TV, radio and print advertising though. I guess a domain name and web site can serve as a localized and tiered "landing page" with some special offers from their telco partners. It's what those offline ads would refer to.

If Google is initiating something ,surely it will on some serious business. but why should America only?
