True, but I've seen on a Dutch blog that the domains got reserved on a first comes, first serve way. So that person was lucky

It's probably one of the staff though, it's not the way it should be, but heck if you can earn a few million, why wouldn't you do it?

It looks like ICM Registry, the company who submitted the proposal, gets to manage the TLD registrations. I wonder if they get to set up the registration rules.

I read that preference will be given to people that already have sites on the domain and decided by tiebreaker when they are more than one site claiming the domain from different tlds.

There's also restrictions on geographic locations and cultural names.

I heard an interesting statistic on the radio this week. Some study (I didn't hear who did it) found that 35% of all web pages on the Internet were in porn sites.

This article says $75, but the article is old.

Could they have said 35% of the traffic is to porn sites?

The s e x dot com was subject to theft I recall.

I guess us guys will end up chasing the long tail domains (weird, bizarre) categories if we were actually looking at this market niche

That might make more sense, but they did say web pages. Perhaps the host of the program got it wrong. I don't really see porn as making up 35% of all pages on the web. 35% of all traffic seems a bit far-fetched as well.

Around 2000, porn was considered to be the most successful business model on the web. Could be that it still is.

Yeah, at one point the domain was hijacked. The story is interesting.

Back in the 1990s when Network Solutions held a monopoly on dot com, dot net and dot org domain registrations, you had to send a notarized letter to Network Solutions in order to get a domain transferred from one owner to another. It once took six months for me to get them to transfer a domain because their process was so screwed up. That is one of the many reasons as to why they lost their monopoly and we are no longer forced to pay $30 per year ($40 with parking) for a domain registration.
