I'd say the 3 leaders are Godaddy, Moniker and Dynadot.

I used my credit/debit card to pay for hosting with a supposedly reputable hosting company and they ended up making an unauthorized charge against it. Being that I didn't have much in the account at the time, it emptied out the account and resulted in hundreds in fees due to checks coming in and no funds left. Okay you mention some good points I think my view on it has changed direction, But before when I've always tried buy stuff online that accepts paypal, like Newegg.com for example they want a CC address verified account. I always thought of this as being self defeating.
Since I'm using paypal becuase I don't have a Credit card. So you can imagine the predicament or irony on that.

I try to only use NameCheap, but I keep buying sites that are registered at some of the most annoying registrars on Earth and it seems to take forever to move the names to NameCheap.

My account is not verified and I've never had a problem with being able to use it anywhere Paypal is accepted. A lot of them say that they only accept payment from users with a verified address, and there is my street address which is listed with the account and listed as my verified address, but I've never verified anything. Perhaps using a credit card might make a difference, but I only have a prepaid credit card which can be purchased at any Walmart store.

Of course once i used another registrar and registered a domain name, dont even remember the domain name or the registrar
