Thread: Keyword in Domain name. Any importance?

Many people say that having keyword (s) in domain name is of no importance. Infact, some of them said it has negligible affect on SERPs but in my opinion, keyword (s) in domain is of vital role and improves the search engine ranking.

I think its important but not crucial. It give you big boost definatly.
It is much harder to pull out site without keyword in domain. It needs twice as job needed to do. If exact keyword is in domain and domain is .com .net .org then your job is 30% done. I think exact match on .infos are not so valuable, but on the other hand i know few infos ranking first for a very hard and concurent keywords.

Those are probably people to avoid getting opinions from in the future.

Do a search on Google for 'free backlink' and see where my site comes up in the serps (it's the one in my sig). It has a PR0, and even before it showing any PR, it was a top 20 serp for its keywords.

Now there is a caveat to that. Even though the search for those keywords will return over 2 million results, I am probably not competing with a high keyword density or an authority site for those keywords.

Well, I was going to back-up my previous caveat with an example, by using the keywords 'digital camera' (expecting something like bhphotovideo.com), and I'm getting some high serps from sites with 'digital camera' in the domain or in the name of the file.

My suggestion would be to search for the keyword/s in which you are interested and see what your competition is. If you see keywords in the domain, in page names, or returns from pages with a low density of the keyword in its use, then you are probably good to go with getting a good serp from having the keyword in the domain. If the returns have a lack of keywords in the domains and page names, you might be in for a competitive keyword to get high serps for.

That doesn't mean that keywords in the domain are necessary or are going to do anything for you, depending on the playing field.

Okay...quite frankly, every time I am doing a search for keywords to find an example of where they are not important in the domain or page name, I keep getting a lot of results where keywords are in the domain or page name. I'm even doing searches for my own articles and getting results far ahead of mine where others are using them and have named the page for it; I'm also getting results from people who have used them and not given me a link back (bastards).

(arrgh...I've got to stop letting others use my articles...they're getting more links back to them on their sites than I am on mine)

Keyword in a domain in my view is of utter importance to get good SERP. It isn't really necessary to have a keyword but if you can find one it saves a lot of time and effort you have to put in for a non-keyword domain.

Just my 2 cents

I am totally agree, keywords in domain is crucial, not only increase your SERP position for being relevant to the search term, but it also attract the searchers attention, because the keywords are bold so if you have keywords in your domain then your domain get bolded too, surely it attracts more attention.

Example, you can try google "glype theme" and see where glypetheme.com position is, and also check whether it attract more attention than others.

It is logical that they helps. Why should someone user for example
www.usavsiraq.com for site about pumpkins. If you are the search engine or some visitor then you are expecting from usavsiraq to cover war themes and maybe news not growing pumpkins

I think it helps to get you higher on SERPs, and it can increase cliks to your site. I like search resulth with more bolded text. I click them more. And when you have keyword in your domain. It gives you more bolded text.

The evidence is clear that a site gets a boost if the keywords used in a search are in the domain name. Just do any search and look at the domain names in the top 10.

The real trick is to find a domain name that includes keywords that people use in popular searches.

Now its much more clear to me that it is important to get your site on a good rank if you have 'keyword' in domain name. I am lucky, I have a website the domain name of which is opposite of its niche but its ranking for certain keywords is just awesome in Google

It's utterly important and will give you a quick boost among SERPs, but just don't overdo keyword thing specially when you lack quality backlinks. Google will hit you with penalties depending on the keyword and competition.
