    New extensions

I was looking at this earlierFree domain names registration | Get your free web domain at 1&1 as a friend of mine is thinking of using them. But I didn't realize how many new extensions there are out there. I automatrically go for .com, even if it means I have to use numbers/hyphens etc but am I right in doing that? Are these more widely recognized now? I'd rather have my first choice of name, every time.
What's the general opinion about these?

Choosing the wrong extension can put a site at a severe disadvantage with search results. Google doesn't apply the same weight to .info, .us, and lots of other extensions. I don't yet have an opinion about the new extensions.

.com. .net and .org still rule the search results. I sometimes see other extensions with good rankings, but it is rare. Just something to think about . . .

Is it the established reputation of .com .net and .org that's why they still dominating in the search results? Or is there a basis for Google?

There is a Google issue with some extensions that Google does not treat the same as others. Several people have run tests with .us and .info domains and could never get them to rank well, while they did not have problems with .com. .net and .org. That's one of the reasons why the registrations for domains with .us and .info extensions are cheap.
