Subdomain Question

I have a doubt, I remember Google treated subdomains as new domains but I have seen many websites that share the Pagerank between the main page and a subdomain for example

whos.amung.us PR7
amung.us PR7

and the owner doesn't use the main page, so how is he doing this? what type of redirection is he using?

If I want my subdomains to grab a big amount of pagerank from my main page what should I do? link to the subdomain from my homepage and link back to the hompeage from the subdomain?

Since the site you mentioned has 301-redirected the root (amung.us) to the sub-domain (whos.amung.us), then the root gets the same PR as the sub-domain it's redirected to.

you are right

and this is also a method to gain fake PR

redirect your main url to any pr site before pr update. your all other pages working properly but you will not able to access your index page.

so what are you planing now with this

Yeah that is exactly why I asked, I have seen many domains with forged PR and they get the pr with those redirects so I was wondering if that site was using another redirection method, to avoid getting flagged if the owner decided to use the index page.
