Thread: subdomain vs regular domain

Can anyone give me their personal experiences of using a subdomain to create new niche sites instead of registering a new domain?

Subdomains have the advantage of being free, but the disadvantage is that you can't sell them without the main domain. Assuming I want to start a bunch of niche sites and don't plan to sell them, does it make sense to use subdomains?

They are so damn hard to manage at times (specially when you have a lot) that I prefer to have independent domains.

Sub-domains appear to inherit some of the "authority" from the parent domain, but if the content is dissimilar, I would still register a new domain.

Yes, that's a good point, if you have something like travel.com you could have:

UK.travel.com
US.travel.com

bla, bla and profit a lot from it, but not if you have:

SEO.travel.com

viagra.tech-faq.com.

Visitors don't like subdomains, unless you have content on the site that people really really realy love

I had two sites on subdomains. One I turned off because of illegal content,
other was meaningless and I dont had any problems with indexing and serp performing. Also i found that Opera blogs at Opera community
getting very easy PR. My blog there was PR4 for almost one year. Also indexing is great. Almost whatever I write there it jumps on first page on Google.

For example two sentence intro for my browser test on my opera blog is on first page on google for Opera vs Firefox vs IE7 vs Safari vs Chrome
and for Opera vs Firefox vs IE7.
