Thread: Symbolics.com - The Internet's oldest domain name sold!

Hybrid View

  1. Symbolics.com - The Internet's oldest domain name sold!

Everyone saw the list of 100 oldest domains and while most of them are still being used be the companies that first registered them, others are getting picked up by domainers.

And recently the oldest one of them was purchased by XF.com Investments
    03/15/1985 SYMBOLICS.COM

The price was not disclosed but I believe it's in the mid-high $xx,xxx

It represents a lot of historical value (This domain is only about 2.5 weeks younger than me ) and likely some SEO weight, but hardly has any value other than that, "SYMBOLICS" only shows about 200K results in google.

What are your thoughts on this?

I wouldn't buy it, as I don't see any value in it. And it's not even the oldest domain name (there is another one that is actually the oldest one; can't remember now).

I read somewhere that the buyer has a development plan, so that might save him.

  3. yep, I wouldn't buy it either, but I guess the buyer has a better idea on how to monetize it.

It's the oldest .com domain registered. There may be some .net's, or .org's that are older though.

I don't see much value there. But perhaps they have a plan for it. Who would have thought that microsoft would have launched a search engine called Bing. I beleive that they had paid 27k for the name a couple of years ago.

According to what I've read this is the oldest domain: nordu.net

It's amazing to see that this domain has been sold, as I don't see a lot of potential to it neither, except the age..
