Understanding keyword rich domains, their niche and valuating them properly..

Lets take for example DesignerLeatherHandbags.com which is a truly keyword rich domain and as good as it gets in every sense if you know what to look for that is. Now most designer / leather handbags are very much a “luxury” item that isn’t cheap. Most of these retail for at least a few hundred bucks while others cost thousands. Hell, some go for $10,000+ when you get into all that exotic and really high end stuff.

On any given day, there is about $800,000 to $1,000,000 on average worth of handbags / purse sales over at eBay.com. Around 9,000 listings close daily and the average price is just under $100 a pop. Now keep in mind that eBay is very much a “wholesale” and bargain finders type of place. Still, it gives us a good insight into just how many of these sell… An indication that the market is absolutely massive and very very active.

Why not sharing a full review here? This is indeed a poor approach!

I recently registered these for $8.41 each:

• ladiesbags.org
• overnightbag.org
• quiltedbag.org
• weekendbag.org

"designer leather handbags" is three words, which makes it far less valuable.

In addition, it receives only 3,600 exact match searches per month -- far too few to be considered valuable. Compare:

• ladies bags 22200
• overnight bag 33100
• quilted bag 22200
• weekend bag 33100

.com domains are nice, but don't overpay for junk just because it has a .com extension. .com junk is still junk.

Will, I like keyword domains, and of course the shorter the better but .org really doesn't work very well for e-commerce types of domains.

Maybe for an informational guide / review type of site, but if you are serious about making it or even going all the way... huge mistake messing around with .org when setting up stores selling products

Wouldn't that be a difference then if you are buying it solely for SEOized content vs the eCommerce side (.org vs .com exact match) to consider? IE .org with > 10 k exact match searches a month is more valuable to a SEO type like Will who makes money from context-based ads, where in your case the goal is direct sales but the name is not as valuable to someone who is not buying to setup affiliate or dropshipping. If someone comes in from Google to a .org, do they have a higher or lower chance of clicking the ads as a result? Or does it matter?


I like your research on the niche though. The site that I do the most affiliate sales from is a 3 word .com < 1K exact domain match searches per month. The sales and adsense earnings come from my content related to the name but not containing it for the most part. Those that come in on the domain name convert at a higher rate for the affiliate sales that I do.

for me i don't mind is dot org or dot net especially like WILL did, 8.41 is good buy better then those junk dot com selling at high prices and parking .....

If you are looking for instant traffic with the high rankings that you get with exact match bonus, a .org or .net works as well as a .com. I have a few .net domains that ranked in the top 5 in Google for competitive keywords within one day of setting up the sites.

If you are looking for a domain name that people will remember and return to by typing in the address, that's where the .com has an advantage.

Will makes his money from affiliate marketing. A .org name can work well for that because traffic is one of the most important factors.

I make some nice $ from affiliate marketing as well... It's easy $

I like 2-3 exact match keyword domains in .net and .org just as much as the next guy but if you're going to go all the way, you should have the dot com

I usually pay no more than a few hundred bucks for these though.

When there is a choice, everyone would go for the dot com. Unfortunately, it can be extraordinarily difficult to find a good keyword-rich dot com.

Domainers love .com's, but customers of thin affiliate sites don't care one way or the other.

The trouble with leatherhandbags.com is that it's such a low-volume search term that the domain doesn't have any real value even if it is a .com.

You are massively overpaying. You can get these unregistered domains for under $10 each:
