I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

They have a long way to go before joining the EU, and it is by no means certain they ever will. Unfortunately their government just has too much work to do to bring their legal system into line with European norms, and they really need to change their culture of intolerance.

I agree that Turkey needs to be part of the EU if they are going to be net contributors, but I'd hate to see Turkey join right now, I think the approach being taken at present in getting them to make substantial changes before being given the opportunity is the correct one.

I dont expect that Turkey will enter any time soon into EU. For at least 15 years. Some EU countries are strictly against that and probably they will not change they mind any time soon.

Also EU is scared of wave of workers. For example Germany have 2.7 million of turkish immigrants...

Even if there would be an agreement today on joining (which of course, will not happen anytime soon), the whole process will still take 10 years.
The Turkish will have to fix some of their laws along with some other issues in their country as well.

Yeah, and they haven't integrated well, even after a couple of generations. More arrivals would just make the situation worse because there is a Turkish community they can join and never have to know any German. It's like the English in Spain, there are so many of us here that in some places you actually don't need to know Spanish, and even if the people in the Town Hall don't speak English there are plenty of translators.

My feeling is probably more like 15-20, the issue of Cyprus needs to be resolved first and that isn't going to happen quickly. Having said that, a modern progressive Turkey is a good thing, they have a lot of young people who will soon be at University age, so Turkey has the potential to become a major export and services economy, and a major conduit to the Middle East for western products.

Western Turks are no different from Greeks, Bulgarians, Albanians etc. The Eastern Turks are more Asian/Middle Eastern than European but the bulk of the population is basically European. Sure the language is different, and they follow Islam, but other than that there isn't much to separate them from other Mediterranean folk.

If Turkey will become someday part of EU then Israel will become too. In my opinion there is no reason to include Turkey except the situation when a group of people wants EU to include Israel as the frontier in the south-east.

Btw i don't think is good to integrate an islamic coutry in EU or allow too many islamic immigrants in EU because after 50+ years is possible to have a new Kosovo in Europe, or big islamic islands in the heart of Europe. They want people to tolerate them but they don't tolerate anyone where they are majority.
