    Wisdom Teeth

I had a dentist appointment Friday afternoon. Everything went well! My teeth are naturally very straight and I take excellent care of them. No cavities, either! But then they informed me of a potential problem. Apparently my wisdom teeth (illustrated in the image above) need to be surgically removed, because there is not enough room for them in my mouth.

So, I need to schedule an appointment with an oral surgeon. They will administer an anesthetic (which puts you to sleep) and then will proceed to cut out all four of my wisdom teeth! Let's hope for the best. :P

I also learned that it might be possible to have your extracted wisdom teeth stored in a laboratory, in the event that you have a medical need for stem cells! I will be investigating this.

    Hi,

    Do you have insurance?

IMO oral surgeon are scam. I heard that I needed one a few years back did nothing at the time (NO insurance) a few mo. later I moved to a different town (I move a lot) went to new dentist in new town. He said I don't see why the other dentist wanted to send you to a oral surgeon I can take care of that here in the office. I saved a ton.

I would get a second opion before going. 2cents.

If you are young and the roots are not hooked into the jaw bone, the extraction is easy. I had all four wisdom teeth pulled at the same time when I was about 25. The dentist just used a local anesthetic and I was fully awake. It sounds like they are pulling a rusty nail from a board, but it was not painful.

    Yes I do.

I have the x-rays here and it is very clear that there will not be enough room for them.

It was explained to me that they will use an anesthetic to knock me out, and then they will cut out the four wisdom teeth to extract them.

I had this done a year or two ago. I was 23 or 24 at the time. I was lucky and only had three - not sure what happened to the other one - so it was a tad easier.

I was put under, woke up feeling odd but no pain. The pain kicked in later that night, and lasted a few days. It was nothing too bad, and they generally give you a powerful pain killer to handle it.

The thought of being put under had me worried and I wasn't looking forward to it, but it wasn't bad at all.

Just plan on taking it slow for a few days and you'll be good to go, at least from my experience.

  9. hi

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in your mouth. This generally occurs between the ages of 17 and 25, a time of life that has been called the "Age of Wisdom."

Ya, I had them removed at the age of 20...military doc who did the procedure did not put me under (laughing gas)...I proceeded to finish a big C programming project later that weekend...worked brilliantly...just didn't remember how I did a lot of it due to the drugs
