    Ah, good old Michio Kaku.

He used to be a contributing member of the scientific community until he basically stopped doing anything more than writing books about nothing and being featured on the news and the History channel talking about random subjects that no one cares about and the apocalypse. Kaku's life has declined rapidly, and it's unfortunate.

(This is in reply to that video posted in here.)

And what's going to happen to that 2012 site when nothing happens?
Is it going to be another "the apocalypse actually comes in 2001 because there was no year zero?"

Let's all climb to the tallest trees and meow to the heavens for salvation.
I mean, to stop publishing a calendar - whether it was due to the fact that there was no reason to continue making it, or perhaps because their entire civilization died - is definitely a clear indication of the world coming to an end. I don't know about you guys, but I'm working on my spaceship to get out of here in time. Enjoy the rapture or whatever.

I did that just before the incorrect start of the new millennium, which actually did occur in 2001 (simple math shows that the world was wrong). Nothing happened so meowing to the heavens must have worked.

The story about the solar storm is plausible. The sun is not constant. It pulses in approximate 11 year cycles. Each peak is called the Solar Max. During the last pulse (around 2000) more solar radiation was recorded than had ever been recorded in the past. The late 1990s and the year 2000 were actually the last years where global warming was documented. There hasn't been any since then.

It is interesting that the article mentions the last major solar superstorm as having occurred in the year 1859. That also marks the end of a 500 year period of global cooling that climatologists call the Little Ice Age. During the Little Ice Age, global temperatures had cooled down so much that the Thames river froze over in the winter and ice carnivals called Frost Fairs were held on the frozen river.

Is it any surprise this has started coming up again around the time of a new John Cusack film?
The Mayans were a brilliant civilization and their entire history is very interesting, but I hope in this instance they end up with egg on their face.
