I could not discern a pattern. All of these keywords were on the same site, so that means that the subject, culture, page titles, and page descriptions all followed similar formats.

Take a look at the detail data. Those are huge differences.

We know that they have reasonably accurate data. I don't know why they would publish a public tool with data that is clearly falsified. The only reason that makes sense is that it's part of a deliberate hoax to sell more AdWords.

    Dear Will
Thank you for this fascinating info.
I have a question – my site (www.investmentslides.com) has number 3 rank for "investor presentation" term and 2 for "venture capital presentation" term. According to Google Adwords the overall theoretical monthly volume is ~ 10,000 but my organic volume is ~600.
Does it make sense? Do you have any ideas on how to improve myself?

    Thanks again,

    Hagay:

I think you got caught in a confusion between broad match and exact match:

    Broad Match
    investor presentation - 720
    venture capital presentation - 8100

    Exact Match
    investor presentation - 260
    venture capital presentation - 590

With exact match and your current rankings, the traffic numbers you are seeing make sense.

As to how to improve those numbers, we should talk about that in different threads.
