Thread: Google Keyword Tool or WordTracker

  1. Google Keyword Tool or WordTracker

Google Keyword Tool or WordTracker, which do you think is more accurate to determine the relative search volume in google? That is which keywords get more searches than others

I much prefer Google Keyword Tool.

I find WordTracker to be way off the mark.

But I don't use any keyword tool to determine exact search volume. I just want to find what keywords are better then others.

  3. I did some fairly in-depth analysis of both:

From my analysis, WordTracker was closer to actual results than Google's tool.

That makes no sense, without some kooky conspiritorial explanation. Google has better data than Wordtracker -- but the data they are sharing is not as good as the data Wordtracker publishes.

The data I analyzed pointed me to the conclusion that Google was purposefully publishing bad data. I can't even think that without feeling like a conspiracy kook, but that's the only conclusion which the data supports.

In reality, both tools were so far off that I believe the only ways to test real keyword volume are to:

    • Buy AdWords and see how many times you ad appears
    • Put up a test page, rank it, and see how much traffic it receives

It not the best news in the world, but it's the best news that I have.

Are we talking about actual search volume or finding good long tail keywords?

The data I've looked at, Google Keyword Tool was pretty spot on. Take the monthly search volume (exact match) and you will get about half of the traffic with a number one spot.

Sounds about right, if you consider 50-60% of searches will click on the first result.

Some keywords can be off though.

I use Aaron Walls SEO Keyword tool. I've thought about purchasing a WordTracker subscription but heard that their results were off so I didn't. Maybe I'll try it for a month to see how I like it.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Google was fudging their numbers a bit, though what would have have to gain if they were doing it?

Interesting assessment. What could Google possibly have to gain by publishing bad data?

Google might be publishing Bad Data because of advertisers who want traffic driven to their keywords..Just a guess..

Though, What I feel is that a mixed analysis of Google Adwords and Search Based Google Keywords tool offer you the best long tail keywords.
I have no prior experience of Word Tracker, but since Will is saying that it is more accurate and better than google adwords, then I ought to try it once.
