I have selected some keywords for my site,I am bit confused.
which keyword should I start with?shall I take high competition keyword or less competitor keywords.which should be selected for optimizing?.

You should start with a keyword with high search volume and as much as possible, low competition, if it has a high competition, it is ok as well but don't expect to get good results in a short time cause surely site owners are also doing seo for their sites with that keyword... you can check out or take a peek at your competitors by typing that query or keyword in search engines to see what you are up against to

You are right.But dont you think high search volume term would be more difficult to rank well.

Yeah I agree with hema,

the rule of thumb: look for high search volume vs low competing websites also see if the competition are the authority sites, if they are then you'll have a hard time trying to rank in that niche.

I would suggest you to check the top 5 websites in SERP, see their website's age, inbound links they have, their pageranks (I don't know if its matter anymore), and whether they are listed in DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory. I am sure you will get a better picture of the competition you are facing

You can use Keyword Elite, Wordtracker and Google Keyword Tools for keyword reaserch. Just find long tail keywords for best results.

It depends on how much resources you can invest into the site for link building and promotion. I good way to start off for selecting keywords to to go with the low competitive keywords and build out. So you start out trageting red widget, blue widget, buy widget and later target widget.

If I were you I would start with less competitor keywords. But you should also check how competitive your main keyword. If there is too much competition, I suggest you to start with less competitive...
