The Google AdWords Keyword Tool is designed to assist AdWords advertisers in finding keywords to advertise for, but it works almost as well for web publishers.
Think Keywordphrases not just keywords. Google adword tool give you all the keyword phrases being searched for. Tailor you title and content to include the keyword phrase you are trying to rank for.

The Google tool give exact phrases being searched for.

Why would a person need any other tool?

<meta>'s do not mean everything, but they do mean something. It's the link building that really helps -- by including your keyword in the anchor text of the link that is pointing to your page, depending on how authoritative the page that you are being linked from on is, you should see an improvement on your SERP.

I added more keyword research tools to the list in the first post of this thread.

There are so many of these now that I have trouble keeping them separate in my mind.

    1. While searching for prospective keywords, utilize Google Suggest, you know the drop down bar which pops up when you search in Google.com, in most cases these keywords are the most searched for.

Start drilling keywords based on Suggest's data.

    2. Once you have your keywords ready, the best way I know to figure out a gross approximation of the number of folks optimizing for your keywords is by using the "allintitle:" attribute.

    3. Create an XLS sheet based on the data you've drilled.

    Something like this.

    Column 1 - Keywords
    Column 2 - Search Traffic ( From Wordtracker/Adwords External Tool )
Column 3 - Competition ( Using or without using the allintitle: attrib )
    Column 4 - KEI ( divide column 2 by 3 )

Once you've done this, arrange keywords according to KEI.
You can use this excel file which I had created to calculate KEI on the fly. http://nbridges.com/files/kei.xls

Why do you need to use the keywords in quotes? I'm asking because in order to simulate the actual searcher...they don't and most oftentimes doesn't even know the use of quotes.

Great resources here guys, and in a same way Yahoo answers Categories, Ehow.com's sections could be pretty handy as well to pick up micro niche keywords.

The new Google Wonder Wheel and the Related Searches button are pretty useful (and quick!) keyword idea tools.
