It's one of those things you don't think about until it all hits the fan.

On the other side of the coin, I've just taken ownership of a VPS provider and I can tell you this sort of thing happens, all we can do is minimise the impact to clients.

I never rely on my host for back-ups. The small amount of time to back-up can save you hundreds of hours should something happen.

FTP backup works well - get a cheap VPS with lots of disk space (ensure it's located at a different hosting co / site)

Indeed. After this incident I actually bought a huge external hard drive. I open up my various FTPs, take all of my files to my desktop. Access MySQL and bring all my databases to my desktop. Then I put all of that into a compressed .rar file and take it directly to the external hard drive where it lives safe and soundly.

I tend not to trust online backups - I don't feel safe with my data in someone else's hands.

The external drives are prone to failure. You can buy the external drive case that holds two drives and set up a RAID level 1 back-up. I would also consider burning a master copy of your best sites to a CD/DVD.

The RAID idea is interesting, definitely something to consider.
And yeah, I do the master copy DVD thing every so often - but mainly with databases.

Solid State Drives are great as well, but their prices are ridiculous.
