What I like the best about Joomla is that it's possible to set-up a powerful site architecture. With wordpress the site navigation is somewhat lacking. On the other hand, wordpress has thousands of free plugins and is simple.

There are lot of ebooks and video tutorials are available in net. And Joomla provides good documentation for developers, administrator and so on. Why do not you guys try? Let me know, if you have any queries.

For a joomla site that accepts submissions you will need a joomla extension for it. I don't know of a free extenstion. But here is a site that does something like you have described Joomla Articles | Home

    Hi,

The first website I ever worked on/promoted was for my old boss. It was a Joomla site. That's what gave me the itch to start my own websites. I really don't know what all WP can do.

The Joomla site he had a forum, game room, posting area to up your own articles, blog area, recipe area, and a lot more. I found it super easy to run.

I really liked how it didn't look like a lot of the others sites on the net. Meaning WP blogs.
You can change the theme but for the most part they are the same.

Downside for me was I had a real bitch of a time trying to do the smallest thing to the theme. Maybe because I was still new at it. I still have a hard time today but some things seem so much easier in WP.

When the site got hacked the boss said NO more sites for him.

For a dummy like me to understand it. It had to be easy.

The idea behind the a cms system is as how you have described. It is very easy to add content and to make updates.
