    Joomla Extensions

I recently started building my first serious Joomla site and I'm researching Joomla extensions which can help my site flourish.

Here are some of the Joomla extensions that I have installed at Top Bits.

    Community Builder

Community Builder is one of the most popular Joomla extensions. In very simple terms, it allows members to build profiles on your web site.

    Fireboard

Fireboard is a forum software for Joomla, very much like vBulletin

    Joomla 1.5 SEOPatch

The Joomla 1.5 SEOPatch isn't technically an extension, but it does fix a lot of really glaring SEO deficiencies in Joomla. Hopefully this patch will be incorporated into future Joomla releases.

    sh404SEF

sh404SEF significantly improves Joomla's use of SEO friendly (and human friendly) URL's.

    Joomap

Joomap makes site maps for Joomla sites.

    MultiAds

MultiAds allows you to integrate ads (such as AdSense) into your Joomla pages quickly and easily.

    Add Keywords

Add Keywords automatically adds meta keywords to every Joomla article you create. This only happens when you save the article, so be sure to install this extension before you start adding articles!

    This Category

This Category displays a list of articles in a Joomla category. This helps point visitors to other content on your site and reduces your bounce rate.

    FJ Related Articles Plus Module

FJ Related Articles Plus displays a list of related articles on your site. This helps point visitors to other content on your site and reduces your bounce rate. This list is generated using meta keywords, so be sure to install the Add Keyword extension first.

    ... more to come ...

    Thanks for sharing Will.
    I found these very helpfull:

    JoomlaPack - Joomla! Extensions Directory

Makes it very easy to create a backup of the entire Joomla site including the database.

Joom!Fish - multilingual content manager - Joomla! Extensions Directory

Management of multilingual content. It is able to translate the joomla interface automatically (database included) and helped me adding 2 other languages for my articles.

Joom!Fish is definitely on the roadmap to be looked into.

As I continue to evaluate and implement Joomla extensions, I find that compatibility with Community Builder and sh404sef have become major criteria for selection.

Here are a few more extensions which have made their way into TopBits:

    Alpha Content

Alpha Content creates really nice replacements for section and category pages.

    JCE

Joomla Content Editor is an enhanced GUI for editing Joomla pages.

    AllVideos Reloaded

AllVideos Reloaded allows you to add videos to your Joomla pages easily.

    Mass Content

Mass Content (and it's plugin, Mass Import) allowed me to almost automatically import thousands of articles into Joomla. This saved several weeks of effort. Each article still requires some checking and cleanup, but this saved a lot of time.

    JV-ContentLinks

JC-ContentLinks allows me to define keyword-URL pairs on my site. Whenever the word "VoIP" exists on my site, it is automatically linked to the VoIP article on my site. This should increase my page views per visitor and lower my bounce rate.

    ObjectClarity Fireboard Discussbot

Discussbot integrates the Fireboard forum with the articles. Comments become forum threads. This should energize the forum and could earn me some great indented listings in the Google SERPS.

    PUArcade

I installed PUArcade to give the members access to some flash games.

PUArcade can import games built for PHPBB, PNFlash, V3Arcade, IBProArcade, NES, Atari 2600, Gameboy, and LabPixies.

    PUDBA

PU Database Admin is sort of like PHPMyAdmin, except it's specialized for Joomla.

    JoomGallery

JoomGallery gives members the ability to upload pictures and manage their galleries.

    uddeIM

uddeIM is a private messaging system for Joomla.

    Remository

Remository gives members the ability to upload and share files.

    Joomla Performance Booster

Joomla Performance Booster is a PHP cache for Joomla which also compresses JavaScript and CSS code.

    Glossary

Glossary enables you to easily create and manage glossaries for your web sites. As I am building a tech site, this should be quite useful for my readers.

    Joomla Feed Gator

Excellent component that imports RSS feeds into Joomla articles...
If you know little php then you can control what goes into intro what in the read more...

After importing somebody rss feeds it looks like article are yours...

I had warez site 2 years ago maded with this component which grabbed articles from maybe 20 warez blogspots...
It was really great to see 20 new things every 4-5 hours (cron jobs) and visitors was crazy over 1500 for just 6 months without promotion...

However I shut it down because of moral issues...

This one could be usefull too. It is always a pain to try to put videos to your site.

This sounds good too. You don't have to hire anyone to translate your content.

I have never considered using Joomla to build websites. But these extensions sound great. Maybe I will use Joomla in the future.

JoomSEO might be a good addition to, or replacement of, the Joomla 1.5 SEOPatch.

    I just added one more:

    Jumi

Jumi is the set of native custom code extensions for Joomla!

Jumi includes custom code into Joomla! by many ways: directly, from a file or from a databes record.

Jumi includes custom code into many Joomla! places: modules position, articles or into its own pages.

    With Jumi you can

    • include - quickly and easily - smart javascript, php, html, css, dhtml script files or plain txt files into your Joomla!,
    • quickly develop small and simple customized Joomla! extensions - component, modules and plugin - like flash shows, ads, scrollers, pictures presentation, etc., etc.,
    • rapidly develop even more sophisticated solutions for Joomla! including database manipulation like blogs, calendars, shopping carts, surveys, etc., etc.

We are also looking at JomSocial as a possible replacement for Community Builder and at Agora as a possible replacement for Fireboard.

SEOSimple is another SEO extension for Joomla.

This one automatically creates meta descriptions.

    This could be quite convenient.
