news portal. Looking for the right software

Working on a newsportal and want to ask what software you guys recommend.
Need something that allows commenting, voting, adding friends.
Pligg is ok to some extent, but looking for something where users can also write their own stories.

A customized wordpress installation would achieve all that.

Also how about a software that acts as a directory which allows submissions to be added in alphabetical order?

I think that the problem with wordpress is that a lot of time or money customizing it when it would be a lot eaisier getting something 'bubble-wrapped'.

WordPress would be good, however, I agree that it would require some programing. Although, they have just released BuddyPress which turns WordPress MU into a social networking site which might do some of what you want it to do out of the box.

Joomla would probably be better for what you want.

You can get information and demo a bunch of CMSs at Opensourcecms.com. Might be a good place to start looking for something.
