Thread: Server Issue Can someone explain

Hi,

I thought my blog was hacked.

I went to blog today to add a post. But all my categories were GONE!!!!

I emailed my host.

Here is his reply.

You were not hacked, there is a server issue causing problems with wordpress. I am working on it.

Me being a dummy and he is to busy to explain.

What type of server problem would leave the site and take only the categories?

Just wondering.

err MySQL database issues? maybe your host lacks mysql security and it got hacked/corrupted/modified by 3rd-party. Of course your host wouldn't tell you that but it might be possible.. :\

I suggest making constant backups of your database and home directory (if necessary)

Hi,

That could be but some how on this one I don't think so. Could be wrong.

I don't worry about backups. After my sites went down the first time I pay to have most of them backed up nightly to another hard drive.

I also keep backups on my computer but not daily, I also have a backup of my computer. I do that weekly. I'm never living through that hell again.

Any other thoughts on what it could be?

What was the server issue? The site is working now.

Hi,

Host said it was the /tmp partition was almost full.

Ok now that he told me I still don't know what that means

He setup A chron job to empty /tmp so this does not happen again.

It's working so if any of you lose you categories on WP ask your host to check his tmp.

WIth these kind of problems(webhosting server) that's out of your hands, great hosting support is really important.

This also happens when your server gets too busy. In that case WP refuses to load categories... God knows why...

This host has been very good to me. Sometimes Sh!t Happens.

He is also the only host I have who gave me his home # and said txt or call if I needed any help. All others I have want me to reach by email.

Plus he is not a reseller. He has root access.

Someday I'll buy mine own server. For now I am stilling crawling. Gotta learn to walk before I run.

Thanks for the info I did not know that. I know this server is not that busy. It's using 12%-16% of memory, loads average .25 on dual cores.

Now if I could get more people to visit the site. That would be a problem I would like to have. The host might not like it but I would love more UV.

Another solution is to increase the size of the /tmp partition.
