    Caveat Emptor

Caveat emptor is Latin for "Let the buyer beware".

This is your official warning -- there are bad people on the Internet who would like nothing better than to take your money and deliver absolutely nothing in return.

Even more pathetic, many sellers are simply too stupid to realize that what they are selling may be ineffective or even dangerous. Their intentions may be pure, but their results are often disastrous.

Many sellers here live in areas with laws that differ from your own. What may be legal for them may be illegal for you. Know your local laws before making a questionable purchase.

Legal recourse over international borders is almost impossible. Payment systems such as PayPal are notoriously unhelpful in dealing with fraud.

Alas, we too are not going to be very helpful. We don't have a magic ball that tells us who is naughty and who is nice. We don't know if any specific product or service is going to meet your requirements or not. This is a public forum, anyone can register and do business here.

The best assistance you have are the opinions of your peers. This doesn't just mean iTrader points, it also means comments in sales threads. That is why we specifically allow negative comments in sales threads. A free market requires the free flow of information.

But in the end, all buying decisions are yours and you must bear the burden of responsibility for them.

    Caveat emptor.

If you feel that you have been a victim of an online crime, you can file a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA).

IC3's mission is to serve as a vehicle to receive, develop, and refer criminal complaints regarding the rapidly expanding arena of cyber crime. The IC3 gives the victims of cyber crime a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism that alerts authorities of suspected criminal or civil violations. For law enforcement and regulatory agencies at the federal, state, local and international level, IC3 provides a central referral mechanism for complaints involving Internet related crimes.

    Filing a Complaint with IC3

IC3 accepts online Internet crime complaints from either the person who believes they were defrauded or from a third party to the complainant. We can best process your complaint if we receive accurate and complete information from you. Therefore, we request that you provide the following information when filing a complaint:

    • Your name
    • Your mailing address
    • Your telephone number
    • The name, address, telephone number, and Web address, if available, of the individual or organization you believe defrauded you.
    • Specific details on how, why, and when you believe you were defrauded.
    • Any other relevant information you believe is necessary to support your complaint.

It will probably be just as useless as anything else the government tries to do, but hey -- you do what you can.

Thank you for this usefull post. I'm sure there are many users in this forum (and in general on the internet) who don't realize that one can't trust everyone on the internet. Even the nicest person can be a scammer. I learned it the hard way...

Luckily I lost only few dozen bucks. Are there any other victims of scam here? (Big or small. It doesn't matter)

Thanks for the IC3 link Will. I wasn't aware of that before.

Even I have been scammed and lost a lot of money! (This is just another way of saying I HATE DP!) I hope NB doesn't go the DP way!

Once DP set rules against publicly outing people who had scammed you, the scammers gained an unbeatable advantage.

That was just crazy. A community needs to be able to protect itself, and the first step in that is identifying the threats.

I've outed a couple there without any adverse effect, so either they reversed that policy, have forgotten it, or maybe I just have a helluvalotta infractions coming my way when they run across 'em.
