I think what I meant was, how many sites did you start up with and was your income in the beginning from Adsense only?
I started one site on 22-JUL-2000 and started another on 25-Mar-2002. I kept my site count down around two for a long time.
Google (the search division) loves big authoritative sites, so that is what is best to build for search traffic. This means that it's usually better for build one or two very deep sites at any one time.
Now I have over two hundred sites. But, most of them are just sitting there. I can really only develop a few at a time -- even with help from subcontractors.
I tried a bunch of ad programs before AdSense, but they were all horrible. The first day I tried AdSense I said "This is where it begins. I am going to turn this from a hobby into a $200/day revenue stream."

OK, I'll bite, what's involved in getting $200 a day from Adsense. Break it down for us in number of page impressions, or high paying niche, or whatever other metric you like that let's us figure out if our own sites have the potential to reach this level of earnings. Teaching English pays peanuts and I want to see more of the world before I'm too old to enjoy it.

It aint that easy.
Even though we'd like to convince ourselves that there's a "formula" - there's actually no formula or algorithm for success with adsense or any other program.
Its all about what works for each individual.
For Will, adsense worked like a charm - but, for me - it makes me just about $1000 a month which is nothing compared to what I make from my other initiatives.
Its very hard to come up with generalizations and, utmost what Will Spencer can tell you is what worked out for him:
1, Register a domain.
2, Install a CMS
3, Do keyword research
4, Write Articles.
5, Promote
This set formula doesn't work all the time - that's what gets discounted most of the time.

I figured as much, but you have to ask just in case there really is a formula that works. Personally I've never had success with AdSense, but $1000 a month would be a very nice start. Most of my income has come from writing for other webmasters and selling links on sites that I've now also sold.
I'm sort of starting all over again, and whilst writing is a nice steady income, it's much like teaching, you have to work long hours to get ahead, and I'd really like to supplement my income with something a tad more passive, like AdSense or a reliable affiliate program.

I suggest you start by figuring out what your passion is and what you love doing.
Don't look at it as an income stream - that'll just lead to failure.
Look at it as something you love doing and which can create wealth.
If you love writing, look at ways in which you can exploit your writing skills.

For me, it was simple. On the first day I made $X. I said to myself "OK, I've made $X from Y pages. I want to make $200/day, so all I need to do is make Z number of pages. I can do that. And, if I promote my pages better, I can do it with an even smaller number of pages."
The same sort of simple math worked when I decided to move to $800/day -- except that falling CPM caused my calculations to be 100% off by the time I reached that goal.
This is one of the MOST difficult niche you are working on. Not only the topic is boring, but its very difficult to rank for them too. What you need to do is start writing about something on which you have some expertise and are passionate about and then start writing. Do note that it took will 5+ years to reach this position and I know people who are really smart and hardworking and working for 10+ years and who haven't reach this figure, so may be you want to start with something small.

You're right. With only 2 sites now, I should probably target a smaller number and then grow from there.
My Adsense income is actually growing every month. Still 2 figures but growing. Each month it is bigger than the month before. But since I have only been doing this for 3 months now, I guess I will have to work hard a little longer until I finally get to the point where some of you are.
I think what I'm lacking right now is the keyword research skill. It's just so boring that sometimes I don't really wanna do that. But I guess that's not something I can avoid now, can I?
