Thread: any ideas for monetizing a jokes website?

  1. any ideas for monetizing a jokes website?

I've got a jokes/humor website that I started for fun, and that is now getting a bit of traffic. Does anyone have any ideas on how one could make money on a jokes website? I don't think adsense would do very well since I don't think advertisers would have much interest in being on a jokes page. Any thoughts on what one could do with it?
Maybe sell funny saying t-shirts? But then again, I don't want to get in the business of shipping stuff...
    I appreciate any ideas.

Set up a daily Joke-of-the-Day newsletter that people can opt into. Include a few affiliate marketing coupon links in each newsletter.

I like the idea of the newletter for the daily joke, but what kind of affiliate offers would be related to jokes and humor, or would you just include general links to someone like Amazon? I'm used to affiliate offers on things like hard drives, computers, etc, for people interested in computers, for example, but I'm not sure what products would be related to someone that wanted a daily joke.

I just went to zazzle. Looks like you can offer all sorts of customized stuff. I'll have to look into this. Interesting. I'm guessing they do the printing and shipping, and then you get a cut. Any idea how much, or is it on their website?

Your niche is really complex to target. SMS-related advertisers would be willing to spend money on the jokes site. If you have already decided, jump in & explore. I just visited some jokes site & Google is serving ads to those sites. It should not matter.

I don't quite agree with you. Ads online nowadays are much diffrerent from that in the past with kinds of technologgies. Ad networks are popular and useful for both advertisers and publishers. I am a webmarster and working with ad networks such as ReachJunction, cj. It is a great idea!

I'd try putting an AdSense ad just above the punchline of each joke. Put it in with some short code in like ###adsense01### . The only way you'll know what works is to experiment.

Think I'd put them between the jokes instead of interrupting the content... but guess experimenting both ways might be worthwhile.

BTW, Welcome to NB Corwin. Nice to see you here.

I think you are both right. Corwin's way seems brilliant in terms of getting more clicks. Rob's way is more focused on keeping the site's quality up. It will work, but probably get less clicks.

Yes, a warm welcome from me as well!!

On a side not, I like the site a lot.

    Hello, all. Thanks, Rob!

I've been on DP a lot, but spending WAY too much time discussing everything that is NOT work related. On NetBuilders I hope to keep the work mindset. I trust Rob so I know I'm getting solid info here. I need to step things up while having fun!

BTW, I've tried using AdSense in a polite way in text. The only way I see significant chickthrus is when I interrupt the text. is it a joke website that also makes money with AdSense, or is it a moneymaking AdSense website that gets reader's attention with jokes?
