That is a much harder question. I'd focus on testing a blend of AdSense and some of the CPM ad networks. Targeting is so important when it comes to revenue generation -- and a general discussion forum is a targeting failure.

Adsense is best. You can also sell your advertisment space to game developers, online gaming, gaming equipment producers, etc.

It depends on the niche of the forum! If you own a forum with health Niche so you can promote it with affiliate products as well as CPA offers.

You can also sell your advertising space to other people

If you want to remain simple & basic, you can monetize it with Adsense & other advertisers
