    Chitika, do they work?

I've got a Chitika account I've had for years, but the darned thing never works for me, everytime they introduce a new ad type I give it a go but I'm just not getting results. I've placed the Chitika ads in the same spots as AdSense but it still doesn't make money.

Has anyone had success with Chitika, and do you know why?

Chitika Premium Ads work well for me, with two caveats:

    • I don't use them to replace AdSense; I use them in addition to AdSense.
    • They only work well on product oriented pages.

Ah, I don't have any product pages so that might explain my lack of success

I received my first payment from chitika this month. Majority of those earnings were from referrals and not from ads. The problem with all such systems is lack of ad-inventory.

As Will said, use it as an add-on rather than as a alternative.

I've invited Ryan Travis, Chitika's Director of Client Services, to join NetBuilders and help us all increase our revenue with Chitika.

Ryan and I are going to be running some tests to improve revenue on my web properties and I hope some other members here will be able to join in the fun.

That would be awesome. The main question I have is what type of site does best from Chitika, static, blog, ecommerce, and what are their niche strengths. I'd love to support Chitika because their ad is just so appealing but on the wrong site it just doesn't perform. I know other ad systems are the same, you need the right one for the site, but often it is very difficult to read through the sales pitch on their homepage and make an educated assessment of the value for our sites.

Hi everybody - nice to meet all of you! I'm happy to jump in here and help/offer tips.

To address some of the comments from earlier in the thread:

Great point about AdSense - we work best TOGETHER with them, not as a replacement.
However - your point about product-oriented sites is not accurate. Our ads perform well on almost any sites that have a lot of content (products or not). In fact, some of our best performing publishers don't write about products at all.

Our ad inventory is actually massive - between our partners and our direct advertisers we have an inventory of tens of thousands of different advertisers. My guess is that if you did not do well with our ads, it was probably not related to the inventory (I would have to look into your account).

Great question elbandelero - our ads perform best on content-rich sites that get a significant amount of search traffic. So this would be blogs, and static sites - really anything that gets search traffic. This is because our ads are set to specifically display to search traffic (check out the link in my sig if you are unfamiliar with our ad delivery system).

As far as our niche strengths are concerned, we have inventory for just about every category you can think of (see my answer about inventory above). However, we see that advertisers are willing to pay more in topics such as financial services, travel, and automotive (higher-value services/items) and less for categories such as video games, free download software, etc. (lower-value services/items).

I hope this is helpful, and please do feel free to ask any other questions that you might have - I'll be checking this thread!

Thanks for joining NB Ryan, it's kinda nice having staff take an interest in publisher discussions.

I take all your points, but the one that stands out the most is that of traffic. I guess it's no surprise that more traffic equates to more sales. Personally I don't have a high traffic site, unlike other members here, but I do have a growing proxy network. Does Chitika allow publishers to place your premium ads on proxy sites, and if so, also the proxified pages?
