    Monetising an auto site

Brand new member here. Good forum.

I have this popular auto blog and am not making as much as I think I should be. Adsense is the best earner but even with that, the CTR is not nearly as high as some other niche sites. Also, quite often the ads are related to credit agencies, which pretty are vaugely related to the blog.

What type of Google ads would you say do best on auto sites?

What other ways can I monetise this site, bearing in mind it gets around half a million page views a month with traffic coming from all sources equally i.e. search, returning and referring sites? Adsense is pretty low given the number of page views it gets even when you discount social bookmark traffic (which is not that high anyway).

    Auto like in automotive?
If yes, I have quite a large Auto network and currently I'm using Adsense and Infolinks, both with good results.

Can you share your URL so we can take a look?

If your AdSense ads aren't relevant:

    • Check your URL's and heading tags to make sure you're giving enough hints to AdSense.
    • Consider implementing section targeting to keep AdSense from being confused.

Low CTR could be your niche or your visitors, but it could also be your ad layout. Take a look at the AdSense Heatmap and make sure your ads are where your visitors are looking.

Regarding types of ads, the best ads are the rectangles. Banners and skyscrapers tend to be poor performers.

I should have clarified it was an auomotive site, so, yes its a site on cars mainly. I'd rather not share the url at this stage. I apologise for that.

What I am trying to ask is what type of Googe ads do well on automotaive sites. For example, is it car hire, ads for new cars, etc? Does anyone have experience. I know its Google engine that determines the ads, but sometimes, and too often, in fact, the ads are for credit agencies. If it was for car insurance and car finance, it would be much better.

That's not a problem at all, but this way we really can't provide you with the best possible advice.

Have you thought about combining the site with an offline campaign?
Are visitors roughly from the same geographic location? If so, (a) local car dealer(s) / maintenance center might be interested in a joint venture, especially during these economic times.

What I am trying to ask is what type of Googe ads do well on automotaive sites. For example, is it car hire, ads for new cars, etc?
Are you using Google's (adwords) keyword tool? It will give you some suggestions regarding search volumes and advertiser competition.

Over the last couple of days I sent out various emails to auto sites such as those dealing with auto parts, rentals, dealerships, etc. I have managed to sell two links totalling close to $300 for a single month. I was taken aback by how willing they were and their fast resposne to my emails. I suppose it can pay off if you have a quality site because advertisers want exposure on them, especially advertisers that are in the same niche. I am intending to sell some banner space too. I intend to make close to $1000 a month from non-adsense within 4 or 5 months. Thats my target. I need to sell some banner space as they will no doubt go for more.

This is what I mean when I say quality sites can be monetised ways other than adsense, although adsense is still my main source of income on the site as of now.

For example, if you have a high quality travel site with lot traffic, you will definately find advertisers such as hotels, travel companiess, etc wanting to advertise if you start soliciting. Sometime you need to take your site to them rather than them finding you. It can be quite boring but also very rewarding.

    That's awesome.

Most webmasters are so introverted that we can't imagine calling someone and asking them to buy ad space. I think there's a market opportunity for the first company that figures out how to represent medium-sized web sites with cold calling for ad sales.

    That is very cool!

Considering you don't want to disclaim your URL (which is understandable), can you at least share with us your PR and pageviews/month number (rough stats)?

I ask this 'cause I have at least 1 site serving over half a million pages per month (auto niche) and I could use a few extra thousand every now and then.

Well, the site gets anywhere between 6K to 10K visitors a day with over two pages viewed per user and around 1 minute 30 seconds spent on site on average. This rougly equates to around half a million page views served, give or take a little bit a month for the last few months. The site has been growing very fast and I expect to increase traffic to around 15K uniques a day and close to 1 million page views in a year's time because I am going to up the tempo in content building. I have never really been concerned about page rank and have never paid for any links; all links are natural, and the PR is 4.

Despite the relative success of the site, its still a small fry in its niche. I am still looking for ideas as to how I can make it a more well-rounded site for auto enthusiasts. If you are an auto enthusiast, what would you want in an auto site other than news and reviews?
