Red face Need Advice Please - Direct ad Sales

I've been approached by a large company asking for advertising quotes on 1 of my websites.

my site is - car tuning central (.] c om (alexa 120k)

    No live links please.

The company owns, among others - auto moti ve {.] cOm ; auto mo bilemAg .] com , mo tortre nds ; com - and others (Alexas 4k to 12k), so, huge sites.

They are looking for some homepage links, something like a sentence with 4 links to their sites for periods of 1 year.

I have no clue about what I'll ask them.

If I ask $100 per year it's dirty cheap, if I ask $1000 they might laugh (or not) as they must be making thousands these days.

Can you help me out and comment on this? Specially Will, as he owns some large sites like they do.

    What should I ask?

    Thx a lot!

  2. I would take your page impressions and multiply them by a reasonable CPM rate.

Say you get a million page impressions per month and a reasonable CPM rate -- for a single ad in that spot - in your industry is $1.That means you should charge $1,000/mo for the ad.

If they want good ad positioning, they should pay more. If they want to pay less, they should be OK with footer links. CPM changes radically with page location.

Then, you normally offer higher rates for shorter-term ads and discounts for longer-term ads.

    Thx a lot Will!

Well, I agree with you 100%, but I doubt they wanna pay $1000 per month, as those are my numbers more or less...

    /me does some maths...

  4. What would your CPM be for a small AdSense block in that space?

(Yes, I realize you can't add another AdSense block. )

My current overall CPM is ~$2.5 (yearly average) - of course this includes all my units (3 link units and 3 ad blocks)

How shall I calculate it? Shall I use $2.5 (which would make it an insane $2500 per month) or shall I divide it somehow?

I don't have separated channels per ad unit btw...

  6. The CPM should just be the CPM of that one ad unit, unless you are going to replace all of your AdSense blocks with this new ad.

You might set up ad channels for a few days to see how each spot is performing. Ad channels can be very useful for tweaking CPM.

  7. That's a pretty big company, I think $1k is not much for them, but they probably have their own prices/budgets etc. Similar companies tend to buy many links from different sites, so they likely have some sort of limits.
I'd probably offer either a small text link for below $1k/month, or a more expensive link/banner in good location. If you have more car related site be sure to include them also!
Alternatively you can ask for their maximum amount they are ready to pay (that's what I usually do )

You say advertising but don't mention whether the links will be nofollow - I find most advertisers, even big ones, withdraw if you say advertising links are nofollow.

Until a year or so ago I used to sell dofollow text links to well known companies for $400 a year each on a PR4, alexa 120,000 site. I stopped because of penalties but that could be a guide price. I'd be surprised and impressed if they expect to pay $1000+ a month

    Thx mate!
Well, I'd say that they're looking for dofollow links only.
I agree that probably they don't expect to pay $1000 per month, still, for less than $2500-$3000 per year I prefer not to sell.
