Then in your opinion what is it?

As I am just one small piece of "the market", I could define substandard content as "content that I would not see a reason or justification for linking to."

You know what they say, its not whats on the outside, but whats inside that counts. Your site should have a good 'personality' ;-)

Personally, I've made a bunch of ugly sites and have had more success with them than my better looking ones. On top of that, I partnered with someone and our site looks pretty ugly especially since we have tons of ads on it but for some reason, we're making thousands a month... so my vote went to the ugly sites.
