    It's getting worse. The House just passed "cap and trade" by 2 votes. The plan will raise the cost of energy costing an average household around $1000 a year. Cap and trade will raise $600 billion in new taxes while we are in the worst recession since the Jimmy Carter "double-dip" recessions of 1980 and 1981-1982.

    It is worse than that. No one saw the energy bill before they approved it because it was not yet printed when they voted.

    Apparently there is wording in there that allows the US government to use California energy standards for all US building codes. As Californians continue to strangle themselves with idiotic energy policies, the entire country may be forced to follow their standards.

    There is also wording that allows them to implement a plan where you would have to have an energy audit and upgrade your home to current energy standards before you can sell it. This could easily add thousands of dollars to the cost of selling a home. In many cases, it would add tens of thousands of dollars.

    My father has since passed away, but in the late 1970s he told me about something that he would probably not see it in his lifetime, but I would see it in mine. His prediction was that I would watch everything that we have worked and died for for 200+ years get flushed down the drain by the f***ing idiots in Washington. I think I am watching his prediction come true.

    This is very sad to watch, especially since there are many issues that have common sense solutions. It is apparent that common sense does not prevail in politics.

    Part of the problem is the cost of illegal immigration. A substantial portion of illegal aliens are low-skilled workers that rely on means-tested assistance programs to make ends meet. While at the same time wire hundreds of billions back to their home countries.

    California is bankrupt and many more states are following in the same path.

    Benjamin Franklin said: “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

    Not only do immigrants use welfare programs at higher rates than natives, their use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is also substantially higher than that of natives. With an annual cost of $32 billion, the EITC is the nation’s largest means-tested cash assistance program for workers with low incomes. Persons receiving the EITC pay no federal income tax and instead receive cash assistance from the government based on their earnings and family size

    So what would you recommend we do about it?

    Illegal immigrants comprise what...5-10% of the California workforce? Some would argue that they keep costs down. In addition to the drains on the economy that you've already stated, others argue that those cost-savings are negated (and possibly surpassed) by crime and incarceration costs for the illegal immigrants who are/were "guests" of the California penal system.

    Some of them pay taxes and see no benefits. If we close the loopholes that allow them to exploit taxpayer coffers, would we still draw the same calibre workers? Would that make a difference? They are afterall still here illegally. What about those who fight to get into the country legally?

    One of my clients has a ranch in Colorado. I periodical visit the ranch to do photo shoots for their web site.

    The ranchers tell me that there was a very good guest worker program called the Bracaro Program that was set up with Mexico. The program expired in the 1960s and has never been renewed by Congress. I found some interesting history about it:

    Embracing Reality: The Guest Worker Program Revisited

    The ranchers would just like to see a return to that program, but it is not being considered by the politicians.

    I think we do need help from Mexican workers to work in agriculture to help keep food costs down. However, most studies have shown that the overwhelming number of Mexicans come here to milk the system and on average take at least three times more out of the system than they contribute.

    I live in Arizona. We passed several referendums in Arizona to cut our costs from illegal immigration. Janet Napolitano, our former governor and now head of Obama's Dept of Homeland Security, fought us all the way to the Supreme Court on these issues. She lost, we won.

    One major issue was a requirement to force illegal aliens to pay the same tuition rates as out-of-state residents. Mexican families were moving here illegally, the parents were going on welfare or working for lanscaping or construction companies for cash, and then sending their kids to school at our expense. I can understand that they want a good education for their kids, but not when they are not contributing taxes to the system. Even many of those who work on a payroll do not pay taxes because of the Earned Income Tax Credit for low wage workers. Any way you look at it, the American taxpayer loses.

    With programs like we have in place in the USA, it is a gravy train for illegal aliens.

    Here are some statistics.

    More than 66% of all births in California are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal whose births were paid for by taxpayers;

    24.9% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally;

    40.1% of all inmates in Arizona detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally;

    There are three solutions:
    1) Raise taxes to fund the benefits to illegal aliens
    2) Cut-off benefits
    3) Stop illegal immigration

    --California estimates that payments to illegal immigrants for their U.S.-born children cost $640 million annually.
    --California has roughly 2.7 million illegal residents, about 7% of the state’s population. State officials estimate that they add between $4 billion and $6 billion in costs, primarily for prisons and jails, schools and emergency rooms.
    --The illegal population adds to the overall cost of other parts of local government, including police and fire protection, highway maintenance and libraries.

    We will never solve the illegal immigration problems in California unless the US Government develops some spine. The chances of that are less than zero with BO in charge.

    Janet Napolitano's decree last week is trying to set the opposite tone. She wants law enforcement officers to leave illegals alone unless they are breaking laws. She tried to do the same thing here as governor, but we have state laws that authorize law enforcement officers to arrest illegals. We really should have our Sherrif Joe Arpaio in charge of Homeland Security. If you are breaking the law, you are a criminal in Joe's book.

    It is obvious that illegal immigration is a huge portion of the problem in California. Just look at the numbers.

    It is also obvious that California is just sitting back and waiting for the US taxpayers to bail them out, which could happen given all of the support that the gave to BO's election.

    President Eisenhower stopped illegal immigration with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents.

    At the time 1 million illegal aliens were crossing the border each year.

    Back in the 1950s, people had a lot more common sense. Could you imagine how loud the Dems would howl if you started Operation Wetback II? Napolitano's recent decree to prevent police from organizing raids to round up illegals is just the beginning. They will try to give the illegals full rights of citizenship before Obama's term is up. That could potentially add 12 million new voters to the Democrat party. They are already talking about doing it.
