The fact that a hardcore atheist like Richard Dawkins attacks religion does not surprise me. But it doesn't make much sense to attack the Catholic Church as the most evil religion. The Catholic Church has been pretty tame for centuries. Every religion has a non-scientific approach to the understanding of life. It is ridiculous to call any religion evil just because their view of when life begins differs from Dawkins' view. Science cannot tell us when life actually begins. Is it when a cell begins to multiply in the mother or is it when that the fully formed infant takes its first breath? Both are stages in the formation of a living being.
I am not a religious person, but I see religion as having a calming or controlling effect on society by placing moral and ethical restrictions on people's behavior. Without any religious beliefs or fear of punishment in the afterlife, societies easily become crime-ridden, chaotic and out of control.
The Christian Church may have engaged in evil during the Spanish Inquisition several hundred years ago, as well as their conquests of Latin America. Both could be viewed as Spanish issues, and not Christianity because Christianity never called for the conquest of nations in the name of religion. Only one religion advocates that. That same religion has massacred more people in the name of religion than all others combined. Islam has been killing not only infidels but also fellow Muslims ever since Mohammad died in 632. I think the last figure I saw was for 2012 when there were 73 armed conflicts throughout the world. 71 has Muslims on one or both sides. If you want to see pure evil in its modern form, read about the new ISIS uprising in Iraq and Syria. This is only one of many Islamic uprisings the name of religion that occurred over the past 13 centuries. Read about the Moors and their sweep across Eastern Europe almost thousand years ago. We are still dealing with conflicts as a result of that.
Israel's beliefs are not the root of the problems in that area. The Israelis are the only side that actually seeks peace. About 9 years ago the Israelis returned all the occupied lands in Gaza and forcibly removed Israeli settlers in exchange for a promise of peace from the Palestinians. The Israelis lived up to their part of the agreement. The Palestinians never did. You cannot blame Israel for retaliating when thousands of rockets are lobbed into their country without any provocation. Their retaliation has nothing to do with religion.
I've always observed that humans are naturally attracted to conflict, at least on a political level. When different races try to coexist, there is always racial tension. When few physical differences exist, religion becomes the point of conflict. As much as humans claim to seek peace, we never quite get there.
