I would especially recommend it if your site is already earning revenue and you can quantify the ROI (at least generally speaking). Then you can test different campaigns to see what pays off. I have been using it continuously for a few years now.

AdWords does not work for every type of business.
AdWords works if you can achieve incremental income that exceeds the cost of running AdWords. In other words, if your site is generating $100 per day in income and the additional traffic from AdWords boosts that to $150, but only costs $20 in click fees, then it is worth it. The problem is that if a campaign is not set up properly, it can easily cost you more than you will gain.
Be especially careful if you are doing affiliate marketing. Given the low commissions found with most affiliate programs, it is very difficult to make money if your main source of traffic is AdWords.
