vi is the "visual interactive" editor.
vi is based on the earlier command line editor ex, which was based on the even earlier command line editor ed. vi itself isn't exactly a command line editor, although it does have a command line.

Dreamweaver for code? The thing is a resource hog. Even on a my Phenom Quad Core with 4Gb ram it still takes a good 20 seconds to boot up , and don't forget memory leaks while Notepad++ is instant and can be left on 24/7 without any memory leaks. ( I use notepad++ all the time, in fact I have it open pretty much 24/7. In the tray)
Notepad :) <3
I always use Dreamweaver Cs4. Its the best for me.
Found a free alternative for Dreamwever: Aptana
I tried it. Its really nice, but not better than Dreamweaver.
I really can't comment about how much of a memory hog it is on your system, but I run FireFox with about 30 tabs open, Dreamweaver CS4, Photoshop CS4 FTP, Pidgin.IM, WampServer, WinAmp, and sometimes Flash CS4 at all times without rebooting for weeks on end with an old Dell Demension 3000 that only has 512mb of RAM. I can't complain.
I am not a master in PHP but to edit my wordpress themes I use Notepad .
If you're using Notepad now, try Notepad++. :)
dreamweaver has the annoying factor where you have to wait for the splash screen to load up, then be bothered about registering the damn thing and click cancel wait for the plugins to load. NotePad++ is instant pretty much, no bells or whistles, but does the job just aswell.
