Building Blog Links
Ok, so not quite sure if I got the right sub-forum for this one. But, I had a problem arise this morning that I'm attempting to suss out. I have a site where I rank nr6 for a desired keyphrase and nr 8 on another. I'm starting a new marketing effort for the site. Should I:
1 - Focus on getting these two key phrases ranked higher (the traffic they currently bring is nice, so I assume getting higher would be nicer :)
2 - Only focus on the least competitive one of the two and a new keyphrase that I'm ranking about nr 50 on?
I know in a perfect world, focusing on all is best, but am time and resource limited on the new campaign. I'm thinking its better to increase what I have in-hand to a higher ranking, but looking for opinions.
Going from 50 and up is much easier then going from 6 and higher.
If the keyword is not that competitive, then give it a shot.
This is a killer question, because there are no "one size fits all" answers.

If the #50 keyword is #50 because it's insanely competitive, it's best to ignore it completely.
Do you have a good feel for how close you are to #5, #4, #3, #2, and #1? I'd take some time to analyze the pages that are beating me, perhaps using SEO for Firefox and try to determine if additional investment is likely to be beneficial.
Also, have you looked into the CPC/EPC of a click relating to those keywords? Do they all evince a similar "commercial intent" on the part of the searchers?
You have no gurantee that you will move up on any of the keywords no matter how much link building that you do.
I would build links on all three keywords. A link is a link. So the link juice will help you rank. It will take longer to have an effect. But sometimes slower works better.
Thanks for the response Will. For this case, I've gone with the nr 6 and nr 50 keywords. Competition on nr 8 is significant and is a "Long War" approach to move up. I'm reasonably confident that nr 6 can get to nr 2 or 3 with focus based on the competition.
eCPM-wise, the 3 are within 15 % of each other with nr 50 being the lowest, but the competition is low through about nr 3 on that one (I'm 50 because of new content on my part on that keyphrase).
@bogart, totally agree with your comments. I'm going to devote some effort to nr 8, but more of a 80/20 split on level of effort on my part at this point.
Thanks for the feedback!
