This is something that is often overlooked, and a very good question. I think when you ask this question it shows that your goal is to grow the traffic coming to your site. In order to grow you need to insure that people will like your site so much that they will want to return. THAT is where growth comes from. Backlinks do little or no good if your retention rate is in the gutter. That is not to say building links is not good, but make sure you are not wasting your time building links to a site that produces little results once the visitor arrives.

True. Try to build links to blank website. Or try to website, with no links. Zero money on both cases.

The value of Content and Links are multiplicative, not additive.

With most of my sites, content is the only thing I need. Because I get my traffic from PPC ads.

Backlinks are more important this days, almost any page can be in top 10 if has more or better backlinks than your 1000 words description.

In the future i think the "prefered websites feature" will have also some importance.

Metaphoricaly speaking, content is king but is only a king alone, backlinks are the army, more links and stronger, the better.

If you wait for someone else to link to your content i think can last years to achieve what someone else is doing artificially in a month. ( unfortunatelly not me...)

I do not agree with you. Make thousands of backlinks to crappy website. First you do get traffic, but those visitors don't trust you because you content sucks. Then the just press the back button on their browser.

But then again, zero backlinks to great content is failure as well.

So, in order to succeed, one must find a good balance with backlinks and content.
