I see everyday sites without contents, ranking just for the anchor text that are pointed to the site. The problem with this method is not having a better spectrum of all terms in contents that could be emphazed with internal anchor text links. Contents with internal anchor text links can help visitors and search engines to increase traffic. Term with different variations can offer search engines different possibilities to return queries in SERPs.
Internal linking with optimized anchor text is imprtant. But the site still needs pr flowing into the site to make that the internal linking scheme work.

This subject generate always controversy Bogart.

PR play very little perhaps nothing. I have seen many sites with PR0 ranking #1 for their keywords and the pages could be content or product with SEO link anchor texts properly made.

What difference does it make to have pages with PR or without PR if you rank for your keywords in position top #10? The goal is ranking high as much as you can to be visible. Now if you are selling links on PR pages that's unethical regarding Google guidelines. So what's the deal to try to manipulate the PR system beside selling links?

I don't think PR play anything into the site to make that the internal linking scheme work.

You are correct about the PR that Google shows us in the toolbar. On the other hand is what we doesn't see which is the internal pagerank of a page. Internal PR is in part a combination of trust, authority and general link popularity and what makes a site rank on a particular keyword.

"The PR0 ranking #1 for their keywords" as you described may (1) already have PR but the pagerank hasn't been exported to the toolbar or (2) links that are higher quality due to either trust or authority.

Selling links isn't unethical. Google in fact sells links. They call it adsense.

The internal linking scheme is very important. But remember that the internal linking scheme is only part of the process. You still need PR to flow into the site to pass into the pages via the internal linking.

A happy medium between content and links is always desirable. But whereas I have complete control over my own websites and favour a content heavy approach, many of my clients simply do not care about building content, they just want to get ranked for their keywords and fast.

For competitive keywords the backlinks get the site ranked. For the longtail keywords its the content.
In my opinion the backlinks are the most important. Once the site has some juice.

Even for longtail keywords backlinks are important. The more powerful sites have thousands of deep backlinks.

Wow, It's a pretty even split. I voted backlinks because it's not going to matter how good your content is if no one can find it.

I think a happy medium is to put up a few pages of content. Do link building for 3-6 months before you invest the time or money into the content development.

The deep backlinks are a catch 22 when you run an e-commerce. Some products are removed from the wholesaler catalogs or keyword/keyphrase categories change, etc.

I took some time to ask a few directories to update my deeplinks and they never responded to my requests. So now, I am not submitting anymore my deeplinks to them.

I know it is tricky, but wasting a lot of time to build deeplinks and consider that they will be efficient for a short period of the time, is not what I really want for my site.

  10. There's a saying "Content is king" and because without content you can't have links.
