This thread is kind of old. Vox has closed. But a inherant weakness in linkwheels is that you don't have any control between sites closing or adding the "nofollow" tag.

Google never likes anything that try to game it's system. But as long as google don't know, then your site won't be banned or sandboxed.

Google can detect the link wheel. It's not hard to detect and Google is very smart.

In any case, Panda has devalued a lot of web 2.0 sites and many of them have gone "no follow" i.e. LiveJournal. So, there's a lot less link value coming from these types of links.

Really, your alternative now is to own your own sites that you have complete control over.

Sure, even many Web 2.0 sites offer hosting on your own domain. The downside is that it will cost money as opposed to being free.

On my recent tests of link wheels, they really didn't have any effect. I built 4 link wheels with 6 original articles each on 6 different Web 2.0 sites.

I suggest you to build several Web 2.0 properties with unique content in them and link them to your main site. Make some links for each property through Article Submission or by other techniques and you will absolutely see some very good results. Although this seems lot of work, but in long term your main site will get full benefit of links from these Web2.0 sites.
i think this is also a process of link wheel. i use this technique and get good result.
