    Don’t Waste Money on Email Marketing

    Here's an interesting post from Jordan McCollum at Marketing Pilgrim regarding the effectiveness of email marketing and how that effectiveness will decline over the next five years:

    Forrester Research says that marketers say they see ROI on email marketing that’s two to three times higher than any other form of direct marketing. 66% of marketers agree that email is the most cost-effective marketing tool at their company.

    So why shouldn’t you waste money on email marketing?

    Because wasting money is bad—and why waste money when you can make sure your email marketing is even more cost effective?

    The Forrester study takes a look at the email marketing forecast for the next five years, and there’s good news: email will continue to grow in popularity among users and marketers alike. Total spending on email marketing will soar to $2B in 2014 (up from $1.2B this year):

    Nice! I needed this to convince my boss (who happens to be my father...) that spamming people isn't just effective as he thinks it is.

    Now the problem is, what are the real alternatives?

    It depends on your strategy. I delete every email that I get that isn't important. And a lot of other people do too.

    Software solutions mostly; decision support systems, document management, tax related software, etc.

    If individual tax-related software, then you likely can still get some good use out of email marketing. You've tried it, no? How effective was it?

    If business tax-related and for the rest, the people you need to talk to tend to be the IT solution decision makers. They already tend to be slammed with email so they likely won't see yours.

    Possible Alternatives:
    Direct marketing
    Conference booths
    Optimized websites
    Ad space/banners

    Business tax-related software, yes, and conference booths are definitely the key imho; at least in Portugal people love to have excuses to get out of the office, listen to some boring guy presenting something (aka me), have a beer and look at a few nice girls.
    Conference booths provide all that.

    Spamming people will become less effective (it already has) but email marketing through newsletters is still a good thing. My mailing list just keeps getting better and hopefully it will continue to do so in the future.

    Conference booths provide all that.
    Serve food/snacks at your booth, between 30-45 minutes before lunch. You'll get people at your booth!

    I completely disagree with email marketing as beacon. In this era there are millions of webmasters which take help of email marketing and they all can't be simpleton. They know the benefits of email marketing. Rather email marketing should be done with tricks as marketing with wrong means can simply make your website lorn.
